Back on November 11th, 2011, I featured the promo video for one side of the double A-sided Strawberry Fields Forever c/w Penny Lane single. I decided to follow that up this week with the other side.

The promo clip for Paul McCartney’s “Penny Lane” was shot at a few locations on the 5th and 7th of February, 1967, in preparation for the upcoming mid-February single release (specifically the 13th in the U.S. and 17th in the U.K.).

Although there were a few sequences shot in Liverpool’s Penny Lane (the subject of the song), The Beatles never traveled there to make the video. The footage, where The Beatles are in the city, was shot at a district of London called Angel Lane. This includes the scene where they are riding horseback through the streets (I’ve always wondered if it was a coincidence that George Harrison rode the “dark horse”). These scenes are interspersed with footage of the “real” Penny Lane in Liverpool, which show the #46 bus, the “shelter in the middle of the roundabout,” the barber’s pole, the fireman on the white horse, etc.

The banquet scene at the end, where Beatles assistant Mal Evans serves the band guitars instead of food, was shot at Knole Park, in the Sevenoaks district of Kent, U.K., where the “Strawberry Fields Forever” promo had been shot less than a week earlier.

As was the case with the “Strawberry Fields Forever” promo clip, the video was directed by Peter Goldman, who was given the position as a result of a recommendation by long-time Beatles friend Klaus Voormann, whom The Beatles had met back in their pre-fame days in Hamburg, Germany.

Extra info: “Penny Lane,” along with “Strawberry Fields Forever,” was originally intended to be part of the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band LP, but since it was already early 1967 and the band had not put a single out since the previous August’s “Yellow Submarine” c/w “Eleanor Rigby,” it was decided to release it as a single ahead of time. Since singles tracks did not typically end up on albums in the U.K., neither song was included on Pepper. Both songs were later included on the U.S. Magical Mystery Tour LP; however the British double EP package of the same name included only the songs that were in the Magical Mystery Tour film.

“The Fool On The Hill” was a Lennon/McCartney original, used in the Magical Mystery Tour film and accompanying LP/EP set. It was actually conceived by Paul McCartney, who stated in an interview that he wrote the song with someone like Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in mind. He claims that he looked at the Maharishi as someone that was considered a fool to his detractors. However, the earliest memories of the song occur around the time of the sessions for the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, a few months before The Beatles first met with the Maharishi. Paul had actually played the song for John Lennon on piano during a writing session for the “Pepper” track, “With A Little Help From My Friends.” The Beatles Anthology 2 CD set has the first recorded demo of the song, taped on September 6th, 1967, along with an account of take 4, made on September 25th, by which time the recording of the song in earnest had begun. The basic track for the master was completed by September 27th, and the flutes were added on October 20th as the finishing touch.

On October 30th, 1967, during filming of the Magical Mystery Tour television special, Paul, along with camerman Aubrey Dewar, traveled down to Nice, France, without the other Beatles. The idea was to shoot sequences of him prancing and skipping about in a rocky mountainous area, for use in the “Fool On The Hill” segment of the film. As seen in this video excerpt, the scene is portrayed as a daydream of Paul’s that occurs while he sits on the Magical Mystery Tour bus, waiting for the magic to begin.

The finished film premiered on December 26th (Boxing Day) in the U.K. on BBC1 and has been on several VHS releases throughout the late 1970s and up through the 1990s. The most recent official release of the film was on DVD in 1997, and it is currently out of print. Fortunately, it still can be found if you visit the right stores. (I have added a link below to a 3rd party Amazon vendor who still has copies, if you are interested.)

This week’s video feature acknowledges this month as the 45th anniversary of John Lennon’s writing of “Strawberry Fields Forever.” Two documentaries – The Beatles Anthology and Imagine: John Lennon – show footage of the clip, but both are incomplete. To this day, I am not aware of any EPK or DVD release by Apple that gives the entire clip to us, as it appears here.

John Lennon’s “Strawberry Fields Forever” was coupled with Paul McCartney’s “Penny Lane” and released as the first Beatles single of 1967, on February 13th. It was promoted as a double a-side. Since The Beatles were no longer touring, the idea for promoting the new single was to do it with an artsy film instead. An old friend of The Beatles from their pre-fame Hamburg Germany days, Klaus Voormann, suggested Swedish television director Peter Goldmann to shoot the clips, and the Beatles agreed to give him a try.

For the “Strawberry Fields Forever” clip, Peter filmed the band at Knole Park in the Sevenoaks district of Kent, near London, on January 30th and 31st, 1967. Instead of doing a run-of-the-mill promotional clip of pretending to perform the song, The Beatles opted for a more surreal approach, where we see Paul jumping in backwards motion up to the branch of a tree and “turning off” the daylight. A piano is connected to the tree by a web of strings and gets a nice psychedelic look as The Beatles dab globs of paint on it. At the end of the clip, the piano capsizes as The Beatles (and Paul’s sheepdog Martha) walk off into the darkness. And all of this way before anyone ever heard of MTV.

The clip was aired on various television broadcasts around the world, including the popular program American Bandstand in the U.S., where some confused and seemingly bewildered teenagers reacted to it with mixed emotions. Seemingly, teenage America was not quite adapted to the new look and psychedelic appearance of the Fab Four.

Extra info: “Strawberry Fields Forever,” along with “Penny Lane,” was originally intended to be part of the Sgt.

The upcoming McCartney/McCartney II reissues and Buddy Holly tribute CD are not the only Paul-related items making it to your favorite music store this summer. The original soundtrack to the film The Family Way was composed by McCartney in 1966, and recorded by Paul, with a few studio musicians and the George Martin Orchestra, for release in 1967. On July 26th, 2011 it will be re-issued. It received an earlier re-issue in 2003 but this is a sonically improved upgrade reproduced from the original mono remaster and will also will include a bonus track in the form of a previously unreleased stereo mix of A Theme From The Family Way, which appeared as the b-side of a 1966 UK/US 7-inch single by the Tudor Minstrels.

The Family Way LP holds the distinction of being the first non-Beatles release that was actually by one of The Beatles. It really doesn’t count as a solo-Beatles effort because it was accredited to the George Martin Orchestra. In the US it was released on June 12, 1967, less than two weeks after the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album made it’s first appearance. US first pressings of the record have since become quite rare.

The Family Way score shows a very interesting side of McCartney’s songwriting style at the time. The original album has no track titles for any of its 13 tracks, as all are variations on either the film’s theme or the song Love in the Open Air.

I toyed with the idea of April-fooling everyone into thinking I was taking the day off, and then tell everyone to come back for VOW next Friday, but then I decided that wouldn’t go over too well. Besides I have to admit, I’d feel a little guilty. So here I am with the expected Friday VOW. After all, when I started these up nearly 15 months ago, I did “vow” to keep them going. So here we go again…and Happy Friday!

I am sure many Beatles fans in the summer of 1967, after the unfathomable direction taken by their latest Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band release, wondered where the band could go from there. Was it possible to get even more “way out”? One of the answers to that question was I Am The Walrus. Walrus was a bizarre, yet fascinating composition by John Lennon, which he says was inspired by hearing police sirens in the distance while sitting at his home in Weybridge, U.K. The recording of the song began on September 5, 1967, just after the death of Beatles manager Brian Epstein. It was necessary to bring in 16 outside musicians for the track, to play the cellos, clarinet, horns and background vocal chanting. An interesting overdub was added to the fadeout that was a radio broadcast of a production of Shakespeare’s King Lear from the BBC’s Third Programme. The song went on to be featured in the Magical Mystery Tour film, as seen here, as well as on the associated U.S. album (originally released as a double EP in the U.K.). It was also the B-side of the Hello Goodbye single in both the U.S. and U.K (and there are some slight mix differences between the U.S.and U.K. and mono vs. stereo mixes). An alternate stripped down version of take 16 is included on the Beatles Anthology 2 CD set. In Britain, the BBC banned the song due to John’s use of the word ‘knickers’. John commented on this ban by saying “It always seems to happen now, that people misinterpret what we write or say. We’re happy with the words and I don’t see how they can offend anyone.”

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week!

Perusing the information in the CD booklet for Beatles Anthology 2 concerning George Harrison’s Only A Northern Song, it’s pointed out that the song was originally written and intended for the 1967 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, but did not actually find it’s way onto a disc until the January 1969 release of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. The working title to the song was originally “Not Known” before George decided to use the clever line in the chorus, which was, of course, a reference to The Beatles publishing company, Northern Songs, LTD. Nevertheless, the recording sessions for this song in April 1967 grew quite complex and George’s lyrics still needed a little bit of work. For this reason, when he came up with Within You, Without You for the Sgt. Pepper LP, it was decided to temporarily shelve Only A Northern Song and possibly spruce it up later for the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. And that is exactly what happened. Because of the complexities of the recording, a proper stereo mix was never created. The release on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack was “duophonic” (otherwise known as fake stereo) and in the UK where they still released mono Beatles albums (Yellow Submarine was the last of these), instead of using the clean mono mix on the album, the duophonic mix was reduced back to straight mono which, of course, sounded like a murky mess. Fortunately, with some advances in digital sound technology there are some nice versions of this song out now. The 1999 CD, Yellow Submarine Songtrack has a great remix by Peter Cobbin (who has also been involved with earlier John Lennon remixes), and the original clean mono mix is available on the CD Mono Masters, which comes packaged with The Beatles Mono Box Set. Also, the version on Beatles Anthology 2 is a stereo mix of take 3 which is a backing track recorded on February 13, 1967 with added bass and guitar from April 20, 1967. This is the version where George still has some lyrics to correct and it is also the version presented here for the BROW.

Welcome to the BROW. It’s pretty common knowledge that by the late summer of 1966, touring had become such a strain on The Beatles and they simply were not interested in doing it anymore – at least not in the near future. For examples of why, check out here, or here. Their careers had been non-stop up to this point, and they all needed a break for a few months. In November, John Lennon occupied himself with the filming of How I Won The War, in Almeria Spain and Paul McCartney went on a Kenyan safari.

It was during Paul’s flight back from Africa to London, when he formed the idea of “the act you’ve known for all these years”. Soon afterward, the idea came together of how this famous sergeant’s band would actually become an alter-ego of The Beatles themselves. The Anthology documentary reveals how long-time Beatles assistant Neil Aspinal came up with the idea of this Sgt. Pepper figure coming on at the beginning of the album and introducing the band and then toward the end of the album have him return to announce their final number and say goodbye. This is just as The Beatles themselves had done in their previous stage acts where Paul would tell the audience they had one more song, thank them for coming, do the final number and split. In the case of the album, the title song could open the album and introduce the band and the farewell before the last song is, of course, the purpose of the Sgt. Pepper reprise before the A Day In The Life finale. The idea here was to send the album on tour instead of the band itself. Of course, the applause and audience sound effects used were also there to add to the fantasy of this live show. The Beatles further reasoned that since Elvis Presley had just sent his gold-plated Cadillac on tour, instead of himself, for people to actually pay to see, then certainly they could send Sgt. Pepper and his band on tour, on their behalf.

On February 1, 1967 The Beatles recorded the initial takes of the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band opening. It took 9 takes to perfect a backing track and the following day Paul added some bass overdubs and lead vocals while John and George added their harmonies. A mono mix of this finalized take 9 was cut onto an acetate for producer George Martin to use in scoring the section for the French horns. A slightly degraded copy of this acetate is what is featured for this week’s BROW. The audience/atmosphere sound effects and other overdubs are yet to be added, and the connected entrance of Ringo Starr’s character Billy Shears doing With A Little Help From My Friends was still being thought out. The ending here has the band vamping on a C major chord long enough for the recording to be faded. With the addition of these further improvements, the final mix took it’s place in the sequence of their other groundbreaking music that would soon be introduced.

It’s interesting to note that just before the release of the Sgt. Pepper album, the media was hinting at how The Beatles had “dried up”. There were articles pointing out that they had not only stopped touring, but their last single was held out of the #1 spot in the UK by Engelbert Humperdinck’s Release Me, and it had been nearly a year since they had put out an album. Almost a whole year…imagine that! History was then made in the first few days of June 1967, when Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band magically put the world in a state of amazement, by coming to your town and all the others, and from there, completely redefining where rock music stood, and where it could go, and in the process, creating a whole new level on which to enjoy it in a fresh new way. And the world followed…..

Happy 43rd, SPLHCB!!!

It’s time for this week’s BROW. As you likely know, it was fairly customary for John Lennon and Paul McCartney to pen a song together, for Ringo to sing, on whatever album they happened to be working on at the time. During the Revolver sessions of 1966, John had a verse melody in mind for the “Ringo” song to put with a chorus melody of Paul’s. I’m not sure whose idea it was to write fairy tale-type lyrics, but it fit perfectly with this time of psychedelic influence. It could have even been Donovan, who has no official composition credit but, I understand, did come up with some of the words. Of course, the song is Yellow Submarine. The backing track was recorded and Ringo’s vocal’s added on May 26, 1966 and originally, it was probably just thought of as album filler. Then, possibly with the help of some sort of mind-bending imagination enhancement, the color came to the project.

The idea was to add a “party atmosphere”, and what better way to create it than by having a party in the recording studio? The date was scheduled for June 1, 1966. The invited, who participated in recording the party atmosphere heard in the mix, include Brian Jones (of The Rolling Stones), Marianne Faithful, George’s wife Patti Harrison, Beatle assistants Neil Aspinal and Mal Evans and others. This week’s BROW is a special recording of the effects used in the Yellow Submarine song, with the backing track and Ringo vocal from take 5 heard in the background. In order of appearance (roughly) there is:

1. John blowing bubble in a straw
2. 2 bells
3. a grinding noisemaker
4. party chatter
5. an ocarina (which is an ancient flute-type wind instrument)
6. a propeller cranked up and dunked in the water
7. spilled coins
8. a foghorn
9. a group singalong of the chorus
10. chains swishing in a metal tub of water
11. clinking glasses
12. more coins spilling and party chatter
13. a brass band
14. a tapping noise
15. “full speed ahead” and other mock naval orders
16. some type of submerging “whoosh” sound
17. response shouts from John (“life of ease”, “all we need”, “sky of blue” etc.)
18. Mal Evans playing a marching band bass drum

So, these things livened up the song a bit and instead of being “album filler”, Yellow Submarine topped the charts as a single on both sides of the Atlantic. Things were definitely changing as far as the unorthodox recording process of The Beatles. Their unique ideas and abilities, in that regard, blossomed even further for the next album, when they became Sgt.Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Welcome to The Beatles Rarity Of The Week. Journalist Richard Simpson claims that John Lennon wrote And Your Bird Can Sing after hearing from Rolling Stone Mick Jagger that his new girlfriend, Marianne Faithful, is quite a singer (“bird” is slang for girl or girlfriend in the UK). Whatever the inspiration, it turned out to be a good little rocker with a nice dual-guitar melody played by George and Paul. It was first titled You Don’t Get Me and The Beatles started recording it on April 20, 1966. After creating a rhythm track (take 1), John and Paul overlaid a basic vocal track to create take 2. Additional vocal overdubs were still needed and several were worked on the same day, including one that has John and Paul giggling hysterically. That one can be heard on The Beatles Anthology 2 CD set. The liner notes say that nothing in the surviving tapes indicate the reason for the laughing. I happen to suspect it might have something to do with what they were smoking. The version featured here is the same take 2 heard on Anthology, but before the “giggles” overdub was added to it. This take has a completely different arrangement from what was to end up as the master and was eventually scrapped. The following week on April 26th, they started over on it, completing takes 3-13. Take 10 ended up being used to create the master, but the mono mix uses a different instrumental ending from one of the other takes. An early version of the mix was sent to Capitol in the US to use for the Yesterday…And Today album released on June 20, 1966. The final mix appeared on the UK version of the Revolver LP released on August 5, 1966. By the time of the following album (Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band), there would no longer be so much difference between the US and UK Beatles releases.

In celebration of the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album being released for the Beatles Rockband format earlier this week, I thought I’d post a Pepper-era BROW. Your Mother Should Know was not released on the Sgt. Pepper album but recorded immediately afterward on August 22, 1967 for the upcoming Magical Mystery Tour film. This was immediately before the band would travel to Bangor to meet the Indian guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for the first time, and just 5 days before manager Brian Epstein was found dead of a drug overdose. This is an early acetate of the song (initially penned by Paul) that has no organ or bass added yet and background vocals that are entirely different from the finalized version. It is believed to be take 8. Upon completion, the music from the film would be released as a double EP in the U.K. the following December 8th and as a complete album in the U.S. a week and half earlier.
