I wanted to make a final update to readers who are awaiting the remastered release of Paul and Linda McCartney’s “Ram.” A couple of items that I did not mention in a previous post are also available with the various “Ram” packages available.

1) Vinyl single: This is a very limited addition item that was released on April 21st (2012) for Record Store Day. It is a reissue of Paul’s first single apart from The Beatles with “Another Day” on the A-side and “Oh Woman, Oh Why” on the B-side.

This week BROW looks back at the early days of Paul McCartney & Wings. Paul chose to limit his band’s live performances to his home continent during these years and play smaller venues such as universities and town halls, allowing time to “build up” Wings and make a name for themselves by getting at least a couple hit albums under their belts before attempting anything on a larger scale. He certainly did not want to rely on his clout as a former Beatle to sell Wings to the world and refused to include any Beatles music in any of the concert setlists of 1972-1973. It wasn’t until after the highly successful fourth Wings album Venus And Mars that Wings toured outside of Europe with a short Australian tour that included 7 shows over the first two weeks of November 1975. It wasn’t until 1976 when Wings peppered the setlist with songs from their newest Wings At The Speed Of Sound album and did a full fledged North American/European world tour, which yielded the only live Wings album. This was actually a triple album set titled Wings Over America which gave us a good 2-hour sampling of the live performances from the 1976 shows, however they were somewhat “doctored up” after the fact.

For the period before Wings Over America, the only officially released live Wings performances would be two songs:

(1) a song called “The Mess” which was never released as a studio recording. The live performance was recorded at The Hague in Holland on August 21, 1972 and was issued as the b-side for the Wings single “My Love” in March 1973.

(2) a 1973 live Wings recording of the song “Wild Life” which appears over credits on the DVD set The McCartney Years.

Because of the deficit of commercially accessible early live recordings by Wings, I have occasionally put up something on TheBeatlesRarity to give us a taste of how they sounded back when they were playing the smaller shows and were still a new band (such as this one). This week’s BROW is another of those times. “Soily” is an all out rocker that was first heard on record as the last song on the Wings Over America LP set or the b-side to the “Maybe I’m Amazed” single taken from this set. It was part of Wings’ stage repertoire all the way back in 1972, however the only official account of it from the studio is from an unreleased film by Paul called One Hand Clapping and issued as bonus material on a DVD packaged with Paul’s recent deluxe edition of his Band On The Run album. The recording presented here dates from July 10, 1973, when Wings were performing at City Hall in Newcastle, U.K. Unlike in 1976, when “Soily” was the concluding encore performance, here it was the show opener. The Wings line up at the time included Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, Henry McCullough and Denny Seiwell.

Extra info: In 1980 a VHS tape called Rockshow was released officially containing much of the same concert footage covered on the “Wings Over America” triple album. Although, it was never officially released to DVD, a portion of it is included on the DVD set The McCartney Years (Amazon link listed below).

Welcome to The Beatles Rarity Of The Week. There isn’t much to say about this week’s offering other than it is another of many Paul McCartney demos that never saw the light of day. This home recording of “Indeed, I Do” was most likely taped sometime between the Ram album (May 1971) and the first Wings album, Wild Life (Dec. 1971). Paul duets with his wife Linda while strumming an acoustic guitar. Linda announces take 1 at the start of the tape but after a minute and thirteen seconds this breaks down, followed by a second attempt which also falls short due to Paul not having the words to the verses worked out yet. Since they are apparently having a lot of fun with it (judging by the laughter), instead of letting this stop them, they cheerfully continue on for a few more minutes before shutting the recorder off. This is the only known recording of this particular track and it was probably soon forgotten over the years. Admittedly, if you asked me if I thought it might’ve been a hit, I would have to say “no”, but if you ask me if I think it’s interesting enough to spin up for this week’s BROW, I’d say “Indeed, I Do.”

Although it’s subject to change at this point, I wanted to give readers and fans a “heads up” on the latest concerning Paul McCartney’s Archive Collection. The next album to get this deluxe treatment will be Ram.

As most of you know Ram was the 1971 follow up to McCartney, Paul’s first solo album. The set is currently scheduled for release on May 22, 2012 and will include a staggering 4 CDs and one DVD, as follows:

CD 1: Remaster of the complete Ram album by Paul and Linda McCartney with Too Many People, 3 Legs, Ram On (version 1), Dear Boy, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, Smile Away, Heart Of The Country, Monkberry Moon Delight, Eat At Home, Long Haired Lady, Ram On (version 2), The Back Seat Of My Car (originally released on LP on May 17, 1971 (US)/May 21, 1971 (UK).

CD 2 (Bonus tracks): Another Day (single version from Ram Sessions), Oh Woman Oh Why (single version from Ram Sessions), Little Woman Love (recorded in August 1971), A Love For You (Jon Kelly remix and originally a Ram out-take), Hey Diddle (Dixon Van Winkle remix and originally a Ram out-take), Great Cock And Seagull Race (Dixon Van Winkle mix originally recorded around Dec. 1971 – here a version featured on BROW here), Rode All Night (out-take), Sunshine Sometime (out-take later used on Rupert The Bear animation music)

CD 3: Ram (mono version): Paul made a very limited edition of the Ram album for AM (mono) radio airplay and only distributed to radio stations. The mixes are not simply fold down mixes but actually different. (e.g. “Too Many People” has a longer fade out and the backing vocals are mixed much lower – read more about mono Ram here). The track listing is the same as CD 1.

CD 4: Percy “Thrills” Thrillington: Percy “Thrills” Thrillington is an alias Paul McCartney used to put together this orchestral arrangement of all songs on the Ram LP. Orchestra arranged and conducted by Richard Hewson. Track listing is the same as CD 1 except there is no “Ram On (version 2)”. These are instrumental orchestrated versions of all tracks. Although recorded in 1971, the original Thrillington album was not released until 1977.

DVD: Video features include Ramming, Heart Of The Country, 3 Legs, Hey Diddle, Eat At Home On Tour, a selection of “Now Hear This” jingles (these are radio promo spots for Ram).

As before, there will likely be scaled down versions of the complete set offered at a reduced price as well as a vinyl edition. As earlier McCartney Archive Collection sets (Band On The Run, McCartney & McCartney II), these will be issued by Concord Music Group/Hear Music. The entire Archive Collection with a long list of additional McCartney albums is now planned to be released by 2016 (Venus & Mars is supposedly next).

I’m going slightly off the beaten path for this week’s BROW, back to November 18, 1985, when a 12 inch vinyl single was released containing three considerably differing mixes of Paul McCartney’s theme song “Spies Like Us,” composed and recorded for the motion picture of the same name. The standard 7 inch single was also released on the same date in the U.S., timed to be out just over two weeks before the movie’s box office debut.

Most of us are probably somewhat familiar with the Spies Like Us movie which stars comedians Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd, who play two American rookie intelligence agents sent to the Soviet Union, where they accidentally launch a nuclear missile on the United States.

The theme song was recorded in October 1985, during sessions for Paul’s upcoming Press To Play album. Paul not only sings but plays bass, guitar and drums on the track. The keyboards on the record are played by Eddie Rayner, a former player with the band Split Enz. Linda McCartney, Kate Robbins and Ruby James assist with backing vocals.

The 7 inch single featured another out-take as the b-side from the Wings Venus And Mars sessions (1975) called “My Carnival”. During the peak of the movie’s popularity the single reached #7 on the U.S. Billboard charts and to this date is Paul’s most recent top 10 single. “Spies Like Us” did not appear on an album until 1993 when it was included as a bonus track on the Press To Play CD issued as part of a series of CD remasters released that year called The Paul McCartney Collection.

The 12 inch single contains three alternate mixes of the song and even an extended version of “My Carnival”. None of these versions have been officially released since their initial issuance in November 1985. For this week’s BROW, I’m sharing with you one of these mixes labeled as the “party mix” on the record label. It clocks in at about 7 minutes and includes spoken audio segments from the film itself.

Extra info:
1) In the Spies Like Us film, the outro of the single version is heard over the closing credits before the entire song is played. The outro features the backing vocalists singing “spies like us” repeatedly along with the uptempo beat of the song.

2) Although this record has not been re-issued since its initial release over 26 years ago, used copies can be found if you look around at the right places online (I’ve included a possible alternative below – see #3 in list of Amazon links below).

I hope everyone celebrating had a great holiday weekend, and I thought what better way to begin the last week of the year than with another installment of the BROW? “BROW” stands for Beatles Rarity Of The Week, and my name is Happy Nat. Each week on Mondays, I try to serve up a rare Beatles-related track for you to listen to and read about, and if you happen to have stumbled upon this post on some other day of the year, well that’s fine too. I’m glad you’re here, and I hope it goes down well.

In the early days of Paul McCartney and Wings, right around December of 1971, the band convened for some sessions just after the release of their first album, Wild Life. The testy little instrumental that’s the subject of this week’s post was recorded at this time, and at one point was to be a b-side to the next (and first) Wings single, which turned out to be the BBC-banned protest track “Give Ireland Back To The Irish.” Plans changed, however, and the b-side to “Irish” became an instrumental version of the a-side, leaving this week’s BROW shelved in the vaults. I’m using the name “Rooster” for the track, though I am aware of two other names for it: “The Great Cock and Seagull Race” and “Breakfast Blues.”

The original line up of Wings was still intact at this point and included:

Paul McCartney – Vocals, guitar, bass, piano, keyboards
Linda McCartney – Vocals, keyboards
Denny Laine – Guitar, vocals, bass
Denny Seiwell – Drums, percussion

So now you know that Alice In Chains are not the only band with a song called “Rooster.” For a track that never made it to final production, it came together well, and I love Paul’s Jerry Lee Lewis style banging on the keys. Enjoy…

Thirty one years ago yesterday, John Lennon was taken from us by a disturbed individual’s violence – the very same violence that John himself had spent much of the later years of his life opposing. Today’s video feature is a slideshow of various video clips and photographs of John’s life that were compiled into a promo of George Harrison’s tribute song to John, “All Those Years Ago,” released on a single in May of 1981, a few months after his murder.

George originally wrote “All Those Years Ago” with different lyrics, for Ringo Starr to record. Ringo made a recording of it, but felt that the vocal requirement was too high for his range. He was also not too keen on the original words. Since Ringo was not happy with the song or his recording of it, George took it back, and after John’s death, he wrote the lyrics for the version containing all of the heartfelt references to John that we know now.

George retained the original backing track, with himself on lead guitar and Ringo on drums, and superimposed his new vocal with the revised lyrics onto it. He also recruited Paul and Linda McCartney and their Wings bandmate, Denny Laine, to provide backing vocals. This makes the song one of the few that feature three members of The Beatles after the official breakup of the band. Additionally, Al Kooper plays keyboards on the record. Appropriately, long time Beatles producer George Martin co-produced the song with George Harrison. The sessions for “All Those Years Ago,” as well as the rest of the tracks on the associated album, Somewhere In England, were held in George Harrison’s private studio located at his Friar Park home in South Oxfordshire, U.K.

Today we can hear the song, not only in remembrance to John, but to its composer as well. Two veterans of music’s past, whose spirits remain strong in our music and memories of today. Thanks for stopping by…

Paul McCartney’s first studio CD of the 1990′s was Off The Ground. Continuing with the majority of the band from his previous Flowers In The Dirt album from 1989 and most recent world tour, Paul initiated sessions for Off The Ground in December of 1991 and had the tracks up to snuff by the following July. American drummer Blair Cunningham was the newest edition to Paul’s line-up. Blair, who had formerly played with The Pretenders, along with a few other bands, had replaced previous drummer Chris Whitten after Paul’s 1989/1990 world tour. Chris had left the band earlier and went on to participate in the Dire Straits final world tour of 1991-1992. Hamish Stuart and Robbie McIntosh, who both play guitar and bass, had been with Paul since ‘Flowers,’ as had keyboardist Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens, who is still touring with Paul today. Paul’s late wife Linda sings backing vocals and plays keyboards.

The title track to the disc, seen in this promo clip, is an upbeat pop-flavored tune that has Paul taking a trip out the window and flying around the world. Paul released a VHS in October 1993 called Movin’ On that touches on the making of the video, as well as a few others from the album. The song “Off The Ground” was also released on a CD single in April of 1993. The short interlude that precedes the song in the video is a non-album track that appears on the CD single with the curious title “Soggy Noodle.”

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity Of The Week. In the summer of 1986, Paul McCartney returned to the EMI label after a six year stint with Columbia records and released Press To Play, an album he hoped would be a change of pace and update his image after the somewhat disappointing response to his 1984 Give My Regards To Broad Street film and soundtrack album. Bands like The Police and XTC had recently put out some music that Paul admired, and so he decided to team up with producer Hugh Padgham, who had worked with both of those bands, along with Genesis members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. Paul had recently written a few songs with 10cc member Eric Stewart and was ready to record in March of 1985. The sessions took place for about two months, and after a lot of post production work, additional sessions were held from October up to the first week of December 1985.

Paul brought in a wide host of musicians to play on the album, including Pete Townshend, Eddie Rayner (Split Enz), Ray Cooper, Phil Collins and Eric Stewart. By the end of the year the album was basically finished, but the only track released from the sessions was for a non-album single you’ll remember as the title number for the Dan Aykroyd/Chevy Chase comedy film Spies Like Us. After the lead-off single, “Press,” was released in July, Press To Play was finally issued on August 22, 1986. Although the sales were somewhat disappointing, the music on the album was solid, even according to most of the critics of the day.

In addition to “Press,” three other singles were released from the album (“Pretty Little Head,” “Stranglehold” and “Only Remains”). A few of the singles tracks had different edits and mixes than the album versions. There were also three special 12 inch (maxi) single releases from Press To Play with several more alternate mixes and extended versions.

This week’s BROW, a fast paced rocker Paul wrote with Eric Stewart titled “Angry,” includes Pete Townshend on guitar, Phil Collins on drums, and is mixed for the album by Hugh Padgham. However, the version that appears on the Pretty Little Head maxi single is a mix by Larry Alexander that features additional horns and a punchier sound than the album version. Those of you only familiar with the standard version on Press To Play will likely find this ‘angrier’ version quite interesting. The Pretty Little Head maxi single was released on October 27, 1986 on vinyl only, and has never been made available on an official CD or authorized download media.
