Welcome to The Beatles Rarity Of The Week.

On the writing of Here There And Everywhere, Paul McCartney commented:

“This one was pretty much mine, written sitting by John’s pool. Often I would wait half an hour while he would do something – like get up. So I was sitting there tottling around in E on the guitar.”

Paul also says he was inspired by the Beach Boys album, Pet Sounds, and cites it’s track God Only Knows as an influence for the sound he was after in the harmonies. During the last part of the Revolver sessions on June 14th, 16th and 17th of 1966, the song was perfected in the studio. In Paul’s biography Many Years From Now he says that it is one of his favorite Beatles songs. John Lennon, in agreement, said in a 1980 interview that it was one of his favorite Beatles songs, as well. Beatles producer George Martin also listed it as one of his favorite McCartney songs.

The first four takes were recorded on June 14th and a vocal track was added to take 4, however two days later they decided to throw it away and start over. Paul played acoustic guitar, bass and the lead vocal, while George Harrison played lead guitar and sang backing vocals with John. Ringo Starr administered his drumming duties and all four provided finger snaps. The following evening on June 17th, the track was completed with take 14, when Paul added a second lead vocal (harmonizing with himself) and George added some additional guitar work.

Two weeks before the Beatles Anthology 2 CD set was released, a lead-in CD single of Real Love (now out of print) was issued on March 4, 1996. One of the b-sides on the single was an exclusive recording of June 16th’s take 7 of Here There And Everywhere, with the final harmony vocal track from take 13 superimposed onto it, resulting in a superb version of the song. For this week’s BROW, I have offered up an unadorned account of the same take 7, which also includes harmonies, but they are much lower in the mix than the enhanced single version.

I should also mention that a ridiculously long list of established performers have covered this tune, including Jerry Garcia, Emmylou Harris, John Denver, Andy Williams, Count Basie Orchestra, Jose Feliciano, Episode 6, Celine Dion…and the list goes on.

Thanks for stopping by this week…
.

For every October since it’s origin in 1986 (except 1987), musician extraordinaire Neil Young and his wife Pegi have organized the Bridge School Benefit Concerts. The concerts are always held in Mountain View, California as the Bridge School is in nearby Hillsborough. Proceeds benefit the Bridge School, which assists children with severe physical impairments and complex communication needs. A main emphasis of the charity effort is the use of advanced augmentative and alternative communication systems and assistive technology. Neil always hosts the benefit and, of course, performs at each of them, as well. Over the years he has had a very impressive line-up of musicians in the line-up including Crosby, Stills & Nash, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Don Henly, Jackson Browne, Sammy Hagar, Elton John, Pearl Jam, Elvis Costello, Steve Miller, REM, Metallica…and the list goes on and on. As a general rule, the performers use acoustic instruments.

The 18th Bridge School Benefit Concert from October 23-24, 2004 included The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tony Bennett, Sonic Youth, Eddie Vedder and Paul McCartney, among others. This week’s BROW was recorded midway through Paul’s performance when he calls Neil Young up on stage with him to perform together on one of Neil’s classics from the 1970 album After The Gold Rush. This is Only Love Can Break Your Heart, a change-of-pace feature that I hope you’ll enjoy. Thanks much for stopping by this week.
