On October 18th, 1988, the debut album by the Traveling WIlburys, Volume One, was released to an ovation of widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. Five legendary musicians had joined forces to include Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and George Harrison. Session man and old friend of George’s, Jim Keltner, was also on board, playing drums. Only seven weeks later, Roy Orbison tragically died of a heart attack at age 52.

Roy’s death occurred on Dec. 6th, 1988, just 4 days before they were set to begin filming the follow-up video to their first single and video “Handle With Care”. This song of choice was also the closer for the album – a track called “End Of The Line”. The song refers to the on-the-move aspect of the group and has a “freight train” style rhythm to give it that feel. With that in mind, the plan for the video was to have a lot of “boxcar” scenes of the band playing on a moving train.

When “End Of The Line” was recorded, three of the Wilburys – George, Jeff and Roy – took turns singing lead on the choruses, with Tom Petty singing the verses. When the video was filmed, the original “train theme” was modified to include a guitar in a rocking chair slowly swinging back and forth during the chorus where Roy is singing lead. There is also a brief close-up of a black and white photo of Roy in a frame.

In the fall of 1988, Roy had also been working on his own solo album, Mystery Girl, which also enlisted help of most of the Wilburys (Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison). The tracks were finalized in the weeks following his death and the album released in February 1989. With Volume One and Mystery Girl, Roy Orbison became the first musician since Elvis Presley to have two albums in the U.S. Billboard top five at the same time.

Most Beatles fans are well aware of the John Lennon demos Yoko Ono gave to Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1994, and the magic that was breathed into them for use on the Beatles Anthology project. Although even casual fans have seen both of the resulting video clips more than once, it has been awhile since I have seen them and thought a revisit of one of them wouldn’t be out of line.

“Real Love” began as a piano demo recorded around 1979 by John with an audio cassette recorder that he sat on top of his piano. The tape Yoko Ono gave to the surviving Beatles also included “Free As A Bird”, “Grow Old With Me” and “Now And Then”, but only “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love” were used for the Anthology project.

Original Beatles producer George Martin was initially offered the opportunity to produce, but declined due to his hearing limitations and Jeff Lynne, who had worked with George Harrison and the Traveling Wilburys, was given the job to co-produce with The Beatles instead.

Since John’s piano and vocal were on a single track, his voice could not be separated from the piano and so it was used on the final production. On the original demo recording, John had added a simple drum-machine beat and a second vocal track.

In February 1995, the additional work began on the demo by first carefully removing the hum, hiss and clicks from the cassette recording and transferring the mono source to two 24-track analogue tapes. George and Paul then added acoustic guitars, George the lead guitar and Ringo the drum track. Paul added two bass tracks, first playing an electric bass guitar and then adding the stand-up bass he had recently acquired, that had been used by Bill Black on Elvis Presley’s recording of “Heartbreak Hotel”. George, Paul and Ringo all added some additional percussion sounds while Paul and George sang backing and harmony vocals. Paul then recorded a vocal track as an addition to John’s lead, not to duet with him, but to strengthen the occasionally thin sound that was a consequence of the cassette recording.

The video features shots of the surviving Beatles recording the song in Sussex, mixed in with various footage taken throughout The Beatles’ career. There are actually two variations of the video but both use the same approach. The video was used in the second installment of the Beatles Anthology television mini-series and also in the Beatles Anthology VHS/DVD sets.

“Real Love” opens the Beatles Anthology 2 CD set and was also released on a CD single in 1996. One of the six original demo takes recorded by John was used in the 1988 film Imagine: John Lennon and is included on it’s soundtrack CD.

While the composition credit for “Free As A Bird” was modified to Lennon/McCartney/Harrison/Starr due to additional lyrical development and chord structure additions, “Real Love” remained solely a Lennon composition.

“Weight Of The World” was the catchy sounding first single pulled from Ringo Starr’s big comeback album Time Takes Time. Released on May 22, 1992, Time Takes Time was Ringo’s first studio LP in 9 years. His previous 1983 album, Old Wave, was not even distributed in the U.S. and, although it was a good record, fell on apathetic ears in 1983.

By the late 80′s he started up the All-Starr Band, but needed a good studio album to get back in the action. “Weight Of The World” was a great opening single for Time Take Time, and the upbeat sound is a good representation of the mood of the entire LP. It features Ringo on drums and vocals, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench on keyboards, Mark Goldenberg on guitar and James “Hutch” Hutchinson on bass. It is one of three songs on the album produced by Don Was. Others sitting in the producer’s seat for the disc were Peter Asher, Jeff Lynne and Phil Ramone. It was written by Brian O’Doherty and Fred Velez. Most of the songs on the album were written by others, but Ringo co-wrote three of the albums songs.

Time Takes Time was also Ringo’s first album where he worked with Mark Hudson (originally of the television comedy The Hudson Brothers). Mark assisted with vocal arrangements on a few of the tracks and went on to be a core part in Ringo’s career. He served as producer or co-producer on the next 9 albums by Ringo between 1998-2008.

Drawing on George Harrison’s personal archive of photographs, letters, diaries, and memorabilia, Olivia Harrison reveals the arc of his life, from his guitar-obsessed boyhood in Liverpool, to the astonishment of the Beatles years, to his days as an independent musician and bohemian squire. Here too is the record of Harrison’s lifelong commitment to Indian music, and his adventures as a movie producer, Traveling Wilbury, and Formula One racing fan. The book is filled with stories and reminiscences from Harrison’s friends, including Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and many, many others. Among its previously unpublished riches are photographs taken by Harrison himself beginning in the mid-1960s. It is a rich tribute to a man who died far too young, but who touched the lives of millions.

On March 8, 2008, I presented a BROW that featured Ringo Starr’s performance, at a Lennon tribute concert, of The Beatles classic, I Call Your Name (view that post here). Originally penned and sung by John Lennon in 1964, it was a great choice for Ringo, as it was a good straightforward rocker, and he sang it well. I’ve decided here to “complete the picture” and give you the video performance this week.

Twenty-three other artists were in attendance at this event, aptly titled Lennon: A Tribute, including Elton John (performing Imagine), U2, and Cyndi Lauper. It was held in Liverpool in May 1990. Ringo plays drums and sings I Call Your Name with Tom Petty on bass, Jeff Lynne on electric guitar and Jim Keltner playing a cowbell. Ringo also says a few words about John before the performance. If this ever comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray, I’ll be the first in line at the store to pick it up.

The five piece supergroup, Traveling Wilburys, released their first CD, Volume One, in October of 1988, and two months later one member, the rock legend, Roy Orbison, died of a massive heart attack. This was just before a planned trip to London to make two music videos for the album. The surviving members carried on with a follow up album released in October 1990 with the title Volume Three. In case you’re wondering what happened to ‘Volume Two’, the name Volume Three was simply credited to “George (Harrison) being George.”

Inside Out followed the opening single for Volume Three which was titled She’s My Baby and featured lead vocals from Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Tom Petty. All were using their Wilbury pseudonyms, which were respectively Boo, Spike and Muddy. Jeff Lynne, as Clayton Wilbury, plays guitar and provides backing vocals while Jim Keltner, as Buster Sidebury, plays drums. For more on the history of the Traveling Wilburys check out this post and/or this post.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week. This week’s BROW is sort of a follow-up to another I posted way back in March 2010 (you can read it here if you like). I mentioned two very rare lyrics books by George Harrison. The first one, Songs By George Harrison, was published on February 15, 1988, and not only contained lyrics to sixty of George’s songs but it was beautifully enhanced with illustrations by one of the finest botanical watercolor artists in the world, Keith West. There is a forward by Jeff Lynne, a ‘middleword’ by Elton John, and a ‘backword’ by George himself. The cover was a black, leather binding with a buckram box and only 2500 copies were made. Each one was signed by both George and Keith West. Each copy of the book came with a CD single containing four songs by George that were not included on any of his albums. One of the songs, Lay His Head, was also issued as a b-side to George’s Got My Mind Set On You single in 1987. It was actually recorded in April 1980 and planned to be released on George’s Somewhere In England LP, but was rejected by his label, Warner Bros. It was subsequently remixed for the 1987 release on the b-side and the Songs By George Harrison CD single (more on this in the March 2010 post where Lay His Head is the featured BROW). This week I give you another track from this very rare CD. It’s an upbeat number I feel sure you’ll dig called Flying Hour, recorded in March 1978.

Further info – In 1992 George issued a follow up book Songs By George Harrison 2 that is also limited to 2500 copies and in the same high quality binding, illustrations and autographs by both himself and Keith. The forward to the second book was by Ringo Starr, the ‘middleword’ by Harry Nilsson, and the ‘backword’, again by George. It too, contained a CD single of 4 non-album tracks by George. The track listing for each of these CDs is as follows:

Songs By George Harrison:

1) Sat Singing – recorded in March 1980 for Somewhere In England LP but rejected by record label
2) Lay His Head – issued as B-side to Got My Mind Set On You, recorded in April 1980
3) For You Blue – Beatles tune live in Washington DC, 1974
4) Flying Hour – recorded in March 1978

Songs By George Harrison 2:

1) Life Itself – demo of Somewhere In England LP tune with George playing all instruments, recorded in late 1979
2) Hottest Gong In Town – recorded in 1986 and also included in the film Shanghai Surprise
3 Tears Of The World – an extended version of this track appeared as a bonus track on the 2004 remaster of George’s Thirty-Three & 1/3 CD, originally recorded in April 1980
4) Hari’s On Tour (Express) – live in Washington DC, 1974

By the way, at the time of this writing there is a mint copy of the first autographed book/cd listed on Ebay at $2256.80 (GBP 1400). This is copy 941 of 2500. There is also a mint copy of the second autographed book/cd listed on Ebay for $4,827.94 (GBP 2,995). This is copy 144 of 2500.

The recording of the song featured in this week’s video began exactly 15 years ago (as of the date of this post) on May 13, 1996. This, however, was a remake version. Paul McCartney originally recorded Beautiful Night way back in 1986, but let that initial version sit in the vault until he got around to remaking it with former bandmate Ringo Starr. Ringo adds drums and shares backing vocals with Jeff Lynne who plays guitar on the track. All other instruments are played by Paul (save for the orchestrations conducted by George Martin). It was the closer on Paul’s Flaming Pie CD. The U.S. version of the video (seen here) had to be re-edited since a very brief scene with a woman skinnydipping caused a controversy among a large part of the American audience. Other countries, as you may have guessed, made no big deal about it and it remained in it’s original form when showed outside of the U.S. The video actually made it’s debut in America on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Another piece of that same show can be heard right here on this website. This video happens to be the last one that Linda McCartney appeared in before her death in April of the following year. The band seen performing with Paul in the video is known as Spud, though they did not actually play on the track. The closing comments heard at the end of the track are Ringo’s.
