Welcome to The Beatles Rarity Of The Week. This time around I’m having a look at an often overlooked gem from John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s Double Fantasy album. “Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him” was written and sung on the album by Yoko with background vocals throughout by John. It was recorded in sessions that took place at New York City’s Hit Factory studio during August of 1980, just a few months before John was taken from us. Additional material from these sessions that was not finalized for the Double Fantasy album was released in January 1984 on the album Milk And Honey. In October of 1984, a single was released in the U.K. with a new rendition of “Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him.” It is, in actuality, the original version with Yoko’s lead vocal mixed out and John’s backing vocal brought up in the mix to make him the lead singer. The single’s B-side was another song composed by Yoko titled “It’s Alright” and is sung by John and Yoko’s son Sean. Both sides of this single also appear on a compilation tribute album to Yoko titled Every Man Has A Woman. This album contains covers of Yoko’s music by other artists, such as Eddie Money, Harry Nilsson, Elvis Costello and Roseanne Cash, as well as John and Sean, and was released to commemorate Yoko’s 50th birthday.

For this week’s BROW, I’m offering up a third mix of the song that was never officially released. It begins with the John Lennon vocal version but halfway through picks up Yoko’s vocal track blended with John’s in the form of a duet. The backing track is the same as on both officially released versions but ends abruptly due to it being sourced from a “raw” mix tape that was never polished up. That’s no reason to keep it from you though, so here it is.

Extra info:

1) A slowed down and even “spacier” sounding mix of this track with predominantly Yoko’s vocals appears on the stripped down 2010 remaster version of Double Fantasy.

2) Without finding the original 1984 vinyl releases, the John Lennon vocal version appears on a 1990 UK CD box set called Lennon, and it also appears as a bonus track on the 2001 remastered CD of Milk And Honey. However, it does not appear on the newest (2010) Milk And Honey remastered CD, which contains no bonus tracks.

For over forty years the Glastonbury Festival, held each year in the southwest of England, has been a great source of good rock and roll entertainment. In the 1970′s you may have seen T.Rex or David Bowie there. In the 1980′s, there was The Cure, Elvis Costello and Jackson Browne. In the 1990′s it got even louder with Radiohead, Primal Scream, Sinead O’Connor and R.E.M.

On June 26, 2004, Paul McCartney showed up and introduced a song that he stated was written specifically for “Glasto.” “Follow Me” had never appeared on a McCartney release or been performed in public before this night. Paul performs it on acoustic guitar accompanied with his touring band of Rusty Anderson (guitar), Brian Ray (bass), Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums, percussion), and Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens (keyboards). A studio version was released 15 months later on his September 2005 album Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, and he also included it in the setlist of his 2005 “US” tour.

Paul McCartney’s first studio CD of the 1990′s was Off The Ground. Continuing with the majority of the band from his previous Flowers In The Dirt album from 1989 and most recent world tour, Paul initiated sessions for Off The Ground in December of 1991 and had the tracks up to snuff by the following July. American drummer Blair Cunningham was the newest edition to Paul’s line-up. Blair, who had formerly played with The Pretenders, along with a few other bands, had replaced previous drummer Chris Whitten after Paul’s 1989/1990 world tour. Chris had left the band earlier and went on to participate in the Dire Straits final world tour of 1991-1992. Hamish Stuart and Robbie McIntosh, who both play guitar and bass, had been with Paul since ‘Flowers,’ as had keyboardist Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens, who is still touring with Paul today. Paul’s late wife Linda sings backing vocals and plays keyboards.

The title track to the disc, seen in this promo clip, is an upbeat pop-flavored tune that has Paul taking a trip out the window and flying around the world. Paul released a VHS in October 1993 called Movin’ On that touches on the making of the video, as well as a few others from the album. The song “Off The Ground” was also released on a CD single in April of 1993. The short interlude that precedes the song in the video is a non-album track that appears on the CD single with the curious title “Soggy Noodle.”

Back on New Year’s Day in 1956, rockabilly legend Carl Perkins released his single “Blue Suede Shoes” on the world famous Sun Records label. The B-side also went down in history as a classic that was covered by a long list of rock and rollers, including T.Rex, Ronnie Hawkins, Elvis Costello and, of course, The Beatles, who were very loyal Carl Perkins fans from their beginning. “Honey Don’t” was initially sang by John Lennon when The Beatles did it, but when they recorded it for their Beatles For Sale album in 1964, vocal duties were given to Ringo Starr. Twenty-one years later, in October of 1985, at Limehouse Studios in London, an impressive assembly of musicians gathered to pay tribute to Carl, known worldwide as the ‘King of Rockabilly’. Ringo showed up at the event to sing it again, only this time instead of The Beatles backing him up, it was Carl Perkins himself on guitar. Joining him was his son, Greg Perkins, on bass, Dave Edmunds on guitar, Mickey Gee on guitar, Geraint Watkins on piano and Lee Rocker on double bass. Ringo, of course, in addition to singing, is at home on his drummer’s stool. Other appearances for the show included Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Earl Slick and Rosanne Cash.

The legendary Carl Perkins is one of the often overlooked singer-songwriter-guitar players of early rock and roll. He had one big hit in the 1950′s (“Blue Suede Shoes”) before a car crash stopped the momentum of his career, just as it was getting started. He never gained the popularity or recognition that his peers, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley, achieved. However, judging by the long list of musicians who have covered his music over the years, including both Elvis Presley and The Beatles, Carl’s status as a rock and roll legend is undisputed. Carl died on January 19, 1998 at the age of 65, from throat cancer, after suffering several strokes.

Welcome the the Beatles Rarity of the Week and happy Independence Day to all Americans far and wide! On this very special holiday in 1990, Paul McCartney was in the final month of his 100+ show World Tour which began in Drammen, Norway on September 26, 1989. Since Paul had not actually done a show in America since way back in 1976, during the Wings Over America tour, what better place could he be on the 4th of July than in the U.S. capital, in Washington, D.C.? This tour marked the first time Paul played in America as a solo artist (i.e. not as a band member of Wings or The Beatles) and Paul’s D.C. gig on July 4, 1990 took place at R.F.K. Stadium, where he did a follow-up show two nights later from the same venue. The tour was documented well on the double-live CD Tripping The Live Fantastic, however none of the tracks from this collection were taken from either of the R.F.K. Stadium shows. That is why I thought it would be appropriate enough to give you Paul performing in D.C. on the 4th of July today. This week’s feature does just that and is also a double feature, of sorts. We begin with Paul singing a traditional “Happy Birthday” to America and follow with a live R.F.K. performance of My Brave Face, a song he composed with fellow Liverpudlian Elvis Costello, from his newest-at-the-time Flowers In The Dirt album. Paul sings and plays bass on the track with Hamish Stuart and Robbie McIntosh on guitars and backing vocals. Wix Wickens and Linda McCartney play keyboards and Chris Whitten plays drums. Again Happy Independence Day and, as always, thank you for being here, where you are a part of TheBeatlesRarity.com.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week. On Saturday, April 10, 1999, Sir Paul McCartney and family attended, as the guests of honor, the Concert For Linda at the Royal Albert Hall, in recognition of his late wife, who had died with cancer almost a year earlier, on April 17, 1998. Paul with daughters, Stella, Mary and Heather, and son James listened in their box above the stage, while a wealth of musicians performed, including The Pretenders, Elvis Costello, George Michael, Tom Jones and Sinead O’Connor. After speaking very highly of Linda, who he had come to know before her death, Elvis Costello did a great performance of a song he announced as the most beautiful song Paul ever wrote for Linda. It was Warm And Beautiful (a Wings track from the 1976 album Wings At The Speed Of Sound). Tom Jones performed an upbeat version of The Beatles 1964 classic She’s A Woman.

After Linda’s death, part of Paul’s coping mechanism had been to go back into the studio and get back to his roots by recording an album of predominately 1950′s rock tunes titled Run Devil Run, that both he and Linda had enjoyed. When he was invited on stage to perform himself, although the album was not yet completed, he decided to do one of the upcoming album’s tracks. Backed by The Pretenders, Paul played Lonesome Town, originally a 1958 hit by Ricky Nelson (written by Baker Knight). Following this, he wrapped up the show with The Beatles classics All My Loving and Let It Be, while joined onstage with the other musical guests.

Epilogue:

By the following month, Paul completed the album and it was released in October of 1999. 12 of the 15 songs were 1950′s covers, and three McCartney original written in the 50′s style were also included. One of the originals was the album’s title track, Run Devil Run, which was inspired by the name of an herbal medicine he found in a drug store in Atlanta, GA. Paul got together a very interesting band to work on the album that included Pink Floyd’s guitarist David Gilmour, guitarist Mick Green (Dr. Feelgood), drummers Ian Paice (Deep Purple) and Dave Mattacks, along with keyboardists Pete Wingfield and Geraint Watkins. Mick, David, Pete and Ian joined Paul for a McCartney reunion performance at Liverpool’s Cavern Club, in support of the album, on December 14, 1999.

Recorded in the summer of 1988, Paul McCartney’s Distractions was a slow and easy track that first appeared on his Flowers In The Dirt album the following year. Along with the vocals, Paul plays bass, some percussion and the guitar solo. Hamish Stuart harmonizes with Linda McCartney and also adds some acoustic guitar. Paul’s drums on this track, along with session drummer Chris Whitten, who drums on most of the album’s tracks. This new line-up of musicians for Paul would continue in his band into the nineties (along with keyboardist ‘Wix’ Wickens & Robbie McIntosh) although Chris was replaced by Blair Cunningham. Flowers was a great album that also had a few contributions from Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and fellow Liverpudlian Elvis Costello.

Welcome to your Christmas Eve Video of the Week. I’m sure most will remember this 1989 hit from Paul McCartney. My Brave Face was written with fellow Liverpudlian Declan MacManus (better known as Elvis Costello). Paul assembled a new band to work on his Flowers In The Dirt album and then to take with him on the road for his biggest tour to date in 1990. His new band consisted of Hamish Stuart (formerly with the Average White Band) on guitar and bass, Robbie McIntosh (formerly with The Pretenders) on guitar, Chris Whitten on drums and Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens playing keyboards along with Linda McCartney. My Brave Face was the opening track on the album as well as the lead single.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week. Many of you may remember a radio show in the mid-90s that was created by Paul McCartney called Oobu Joobu. The program aired on the American radio network Westwood One and the name was inspired by the BBC’s production of a play by the late French writer Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) called Ubu Cocu (if someone knows what that means, feel free to leave a comment). The show was officially plugged as a weekly radio program created, directed and presented by DeeJay Paul McCartney. Paul’s shorter tag-descriptor for the show was Wide Screen Radio which is heard in a few of the jingles used on the show. Each broadcast was about an hour (except for a couple two-hour specials) and it ran every week from Memorial Day weekend (last weekend in May) through the weekend following the U.S. Labor Day holiday (September) 1995. Besides being able to hear Paul in action as a DJ, the show’s material included demos, rehearsals, live performances and many unreleased recordings by both Paul McCartney and The Beatles. Needless to say, much of the material from the shows have been widely bootlegged. Paul also included guests on the show like Stevie Wonder, Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders) and Little Richard and he featured a lot of music by other acts such as Buddy Holly, Steve Miller, and Elvis Costello, to cite only a few. There was even a segment by Linda McCartney called Cook Of The House (of course, named after her track on the Wings At the Speed Of Sound LP), where she would share vegetarian recipes while Paul would often get to ‘stir’ or ‘taste-test’.

On the June 25, 1995 broadcast of Oobu Joobu, Paul presented a show with the theme of ‘Ecology’ and the music followed suit with some tracks like Looking For Changes, Wild Life and Linda McCartney’s touching song Cow (later released on her posthumous CD Wide Prairie), all addressing animal rights. This week’s BROW is another one featured on that show. It is The Beatles ‘White Album’ classic Mother Nature’s Son. In the soundclip, I’ve included Paul’s explanation that the words were inspired by a song he liked as a kid called Nature Boy (he is likely referring to the 1948 recording by Nat King Cole). This version of Mother Nature’s Son was recorded sometime in 1994 with Paul’s “90′s” band: Hamish Stuart, Robbie McIntosh, Wix Wickens, and Blair Cunningham. Unlike the original Beatles account of the song, this one features some outstanding accordion work by Wix. A couple years after the Oobu Joobu broadcasts in 1997, Paul included an abbreviated account of this particular Oobu Joobu program on a bonus disc, packaged with his Flaming Pie CD, and this was only available on the initial few copies sold from Best Buy stores. This bonus disc is now somewhat hard to find. There was also some edits of selected material from the Oobu Joobu broadcasts released officially as ‘b-sides’ on a few of the singles associated with the Flaming Pie CD.

For every October since it’s origin in 1986 (except 1987), musician extraordinaire Neil Young and his wife Pegi have organized the Bridge School Benefit Concerts. The concerts are always held in Mountain View, California as the Bridge School is in nearby Hillsborough. Proceeds benefit the Bridge School, which assists children with severe physical impairments and complex communication needs. A main emphasis of the charity effort is the use of advanced augmentative and alternative communication systems and assistive technology. Neil always hosts the benefit and, of course, performs at each of them, as well. Over the years he has had a very impressive line-up of musicians in the line-up including Crosby, Stills & Nash, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Don Henly, Jackson Browne, Sammy Hagar, Elton John, Pearl Jam, Elvis Costello, Steve Miller, REM, Metallica…and the list goes on and on. As a general rule, the performers use acoustic instruments.

The 18th Bridge School Benefit Concert from October 23-24, 2004 included The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tony Bennett, Sonic Youth, Eddie Vedder and Paul McCartney, among others. This week’s BROW was recorded midway through Paul’s performance when he calls Neil Young up on stage with him to perform together on one of Neil’s classics from the 1970 album After The Gold Rush. This is Only Love Can Break Your Heart, a change-of-pace feature that I hope you’ll enjoy. Thanks much for stopping by this week.
