Welcome back for another edition of The Beatles Rarity Of The Week. After the filming of their surprise concert on the roof of Apple during the cold afternoon of January 30, 1969, The Beatles thought they had enough footage for their Let It Be documentary film. Well, almost anyway. There were still a few songs not appropriate for the rooftop show that they knew should be covered in the film with finalized versions. Those three numbers were “Two Of Us”, “The Long And Winding Road” and “Let It Be”.

So on the following day, The Beatles and Billy Preston returned to the Apple basement to perform these songs for the camera until they had releasable takes. “Two Of Us” was worked on first and knocked off fairly quickly. The other two required a bit more time. The final results of these recordings are seen in the Let It Be documentary just before the rooftop show which is used to wrap up the film.

This week’s BROW comes from a warm-up rehearsal from this January 31st session, recorded just before getting serious with the initial takes of “Two Of Us” were made. While in a skiffle mood, with acoustic guitars in hand, Paul McCartney leads the group into a singalong medley of Lonnie Donegan’s “Take This Hammer” which continues with Donegan’s “Lost John” with both John Lennon and Paul singing. George Harrison then joins in to steer the band into Johnny Cash’s “Five Feet High And Rising”. After they’ve played about as much of the song as they remember, Paul moves them into the musically similar tune “Bear Cat Mama” (a Jimmie Davis number from the 1930′s). Keeping the same backing, John leads them into the chorus from Koerner, Ray and Glover’s “Black Dog”. This is a traditional song that’s melody was later appropriated for the chorus of his own song, “Crippled Inside” that made it’s way onto his Imagine album in 1971. George and John then go into a few bars of Carl Perkins’ “Right String, Wrong Yo-Yo”. To wrap up the medley John duets with Paul for a verse of their own “Run For Your Life”, the closer for their 1965 Rubber Soul album. The medley ends with a brief reprise of “Black Dog”. The audio dropouts heard here are a result of the source tape coming from an extraction from an old stack of camera reels. A proper studio recording of the warm up sessions was not considered a necessary expense at the time.

By the end of the day, The Beatles had completed acceptable takes of “Two Of Us”, “The Long And Winding Road” and “Let It Be”, all three of which were used in both the film and Let It Be album in 1970, thus bringing to a close the so-called “Get Back” sessions of January 1969.

Welcome back for yet another Beatles Rarity Of The Week. “Something” was a song written by George Harrison in January 1969 and later featured, not only on the Abbey Road album later in the year, but also on the A-side of a single coupled with John Lennon’s “Come Together” on the B-side. This was George’s first composition (and last) to be issued on the top side of a Beatles single. It was a good pick too because it topped the U.S. charts (Billboard) and reached number 4 on the U.K (Melody Maker) charts. It is second only to Yesterday as being the most covered Beatles song of all time. Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney praised “Something” as among the best songs written by George, or that the group had to offer.

For this week’s BROW, I’m sharing a recording of the song while still a work in progress. This is a mono mix of “Something” that’s basic track was laid down on May 2, 1969. Billy Preston, who had recently worked with The Beatles during the Get Back/Let It Be sessions, played organ, while Paul played bass. George Harrison played rhythm guitar through a Leslie speaker and John played a second rhythm guitar. Ringo Starr, of course, manned the drum kit. At this point the song was 7:48 due to a extended jam at the conclusion (some of which I’ve included here) and labeled as take 36.

On May 5th, The Beatles upgraded take 36 with the following changes: Paul redid his bass track and George added the lead guitar parts, including his fantastic solo. Billy Preston added more organ overdubs sometime before July 11th, which was the date George recorded his first lead vocal for the track. The extended jam at the end was also shortened. The end result, take 37, would receive further improvements later in the week, when George would return to the studio to redo the vocal track, with some assistance from Paul. With the new vocal track, a stereo mix was created for the master we hear on Abbey Road.

Here now, with the original vocal track, is take 37, complete with sound engineer Phil McDonald’s take announcement.

I thought this would be an appropriate choice for this week’s video feature since the date is September 9th. The Beatles, along with friend and keyboardist Billy Preston, made their final concert appearance at around 1:00 pm on January 30, 1969, on the roof of their Apple headquarters and studio at 3 Savile Row, London. It was an unannounced performance that the London bobbies eventually put a stop to, due to the disruption in the city during the middle of the business day. The Beatles themselves were actually hoping to be arrested for disturbing the peace because it was all being filmed, and that would be the perfect climax of their Let It Be documentary. As it turned out, they were permitted to complete a final version of Get Back before having to stop. The show included multiple takes of Get Back, Dig A Pony, Don’t Let Me Down and I’ve Got A Feeling, along with this performance of One After 909. The Beatles played for 42 minutes before being shut down, and the best 20 minutes are included as the conclusion to the Let It Be film.

One After 909 was actually a song The Beatles revived during their January 1969 Get Back Sessions. Originally titled The One After 909, it was one of the very first songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. This was in 1957, during the time when they were part of The Quarry Men. On March 5, 1963, The Beatles recorded it in the studio during the same session when they recorded their From Me To You/Thank You Girl single, but they were not satisfied with the result and it was shelved. Some of this early attempt of the song (takes 3-6) is now on the Beatles Anthology 1 CD set.

The rooftop performance of One After 909, seen here, was also used for the Let It Be LP.

George Harrison and his spiritual mentor, Ravi Shankar, organized the Concert For Bangladesh to relieve the country from a couple of big messes.

First off, on Nov. 12, 1970, a devastating tropical storm, known as the 1970 Bhola Cyclone, struck East Pakistan (currently Bangladesh). Equivalent in strength to a category 3 hurricane, it flooded the Ganges Delta and was responsible for the loss of 500,000 people in the region, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters of modern times.

Secondly, the Bangladesh Liberation War, according to many reports, had resulted in three million deaths and widespread violation of human rights by the Pakistan Army. Many civilians were killed, raped and tortured, and their exact numbers to this day are not known, but the genocide tactics used by West Pakistan against the Bengali and Indians of the region has been considered by many historians as comparable to the atrocities of World War II.

Beginning in the summer of 1970, George and Ravi organized both an afternoon and evening concert with a large array of musical artists, including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Billy Preston and Badfinger. The event, held at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, was the first benefit concert of this magnitude in world history. The initial monies raised for the show came to $243,400 and some change, and to this day, the ongoing sales of the Concert for Bangladesh albums, CDs, DVDs, etc. continue to go to UNICEF (to benefit children in countries devastated by war).

This video clip features a rehearsal duet between Bob Dylan and George recorded at a soundcheck made on August 1, 1971, before one of the shows. If Not For You is a Dylan composition that was featured on his 1970 New Morning album and had also recently been covered by George on his triple album, All Things Must Pass, also from 1970. Bob had also co-wrote the opener for All Things Must Pass with George (a song called I’d Have You Anytime), and George had played on a few tracks from Bob’s recent Self Portrait sessions. As the two were working so well together, it was only natural to invite Bob to be a part of the event.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week. A well-known period of Beatles history known as the Get Back Sessions filled the entire month of January 1969. During this time, movie cameras rolled while The Beatles rehearsed their new material, as well as covered a massive host of oldies that they learned during their formative years. Most of the new material ended up being released the following year on their swansong LP release, Let It Be. These sessions culminated on January 30th with a surprise Thursday afternoon lunchtime concert on the roof of their London-based Apple Headquarters on Savile Row.

The video footage of the sessions and concert were originally planned to be used for a television special but instead were later used to create the Let It Be film. An album, originally to be called Get Back, was also planned but became temporarily shelved, until it was reworked in 1970 by Phil Spector to become the Let It Be album. On January 31st, there were three songs that needed to be completed that were not appropriate for the previous day’s rooftop performance – Two Of Us, The Long And Winding Road and Let It Be. Unlike the earlier informal part of the sessions, The Beatles were to perform directly to the camera and attempt to record releasable takes. Two Of Us was polished off quickly while The Long And Winding Road and Let It Be took more time to get right.

After too many consecutive performances of The Long And Winding Road, John Lennon, needing a change of pace, breaks into a new song that is the subject of this week’s BROW. John had only introduced I Want You to the band a few days before, on January 28th. Of course, it ended up on the Abbey Road album later in the year, but at this point it is only a very basic track and does not yet have the “She’s So Heavy” refrain. It wouldn’t be until the following month that the band would begin any serious recording for I Want You, and while very undeveloped at this point, I have chosen this particular performance of the song because of several interesting attributes. I will address a few here and you’re certainly free to add more in the comments, if you like.

First off, there is the matter of the lead vocal. Paul, obviously needing the break from “Winding Road” as much as John, is inspired enough by John’s leading guitar lick that he elects to sing this Lennon-vocal number himself. John is apparently happy to let him continue and keeps hammering out guitar chords. Most are used to hearing John sing this tune on the Abbey Road album, so hearing it with a McCartney vocal is an interesting variation.

Secondly, there are some interesting keyboard fills thrown in by Billy Preston here. Billy had already been playing with the band for over a week, including the rooftop concert. Billy did not play in the Abbey Road sessions, so, like ‘vocals by Paul’, ‘keyboards by Billy’ is another interesting variation.

Additionally, the finalized version of I Want You had such an elaborate production with John’s lead guitar and bluesy solo in the middle, the white noise created by the newest innovation at the time – the Moog synthesizer – and the long buildup that brings the song to the roaring climax of sound that ends in the most abrupt and unpredictable way possible: it just immediately stops. Considering all of these enhancements, it is good to hear a bare-bones version, complete with jam session, to illustrate the loose way the song started out.

Thanks for stopping by this week…

Welcome the the Beatles Rarity of the Week. During 1974, George Harrison made a few changes to update his life and career. First off, he separated with his wife of 8 years, Patti Boyd, who left George for Eric Clapton. Also, with the end of his contract with EMI in sight, he decided to found his own record label, Dark Horse Records, and spend some time with some of the acts he was interested in recruiting for the label.

In January 1976 with his previous contract obligations fulfilled, he was able to join the label himself. He also planned a new LP release which would also have the title Dark Horse, and set up the last two months of the year to support it with a full fledged North American tour.

With everything that was going on with George, he did not manage to begin recording the new record until September, leaving him little time before needed rehearsals in mid-October with his touring band. One song on the album was a cover of the Everly Brothers hit Bye Bye Love, with modified lyrics to parody George’s breakup with Patti, and even included her and Eric Clapton on the track. There was a large host of other musicians on the record (many of who went on the upcoming tour with George) to include Tom Scott (of the LA Express), Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Klaus Voormann, Willie Weeks, Jim Keltner, Gary Wright, Olivia Arias (future wife), Mick Jones, Andy Newmark, Alvin Lee, Nicky Hopkins, Robben Ford, Roger Kellaway, Max Bennett, Chuck Findley and Emil Richards.

Unfortunately, during the sessions, George came down with a serious case of laryngitis. But, due to the time constraints, he felt he had no choice other than to finish recording, despite his raw voice. When the album was released on December 9, 1974, critics soon became referring to it as “Dark Hoarse” in reference to George’s strained vocals. This limitation notwithstanding, good musicianship helped carry it through, and it peaked at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart on January 25, 1975.

By the time the tour kicked off on November 2, 1974, George’s voice had been given no time at all to recover, as is apparent in this week’s BROW, recorded on November 22, 1974 at the Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. George clears his afflicted throat and then performs John Lennon’s Beatles classic, In My Life, with a slower horn-driven rhythm and philosophically modified lyrics that replaced a concluding verse line with In my life I love God more. Along with George, the core band included Robben Ford (guitar), Willie Weeks (bass), Andy Newmark (drums) and old friend Billy Preston (keyboards). The horns section included Tom Scott (horns), Chuck Findley (trumpet) as well as Jim Horn (saxophone), who is a name you may recognize from various liner notes from any of the four Beatles as solo artists. At the conclusion of the track George sends a blessing to John, Paul, himself and Ringo along with all of the “exes,” who at the time included not only Patti, but also John Lennon’s former wife Cynthia, the woman cited as the initial inspiration for the song.

This Song was the lead single off of George Harrison’s 1976 album Thirty-Three & 1/3. The album name was inspired by George’s age while recording it, along with the speed the record played at on a turntable (33 1/3 rpm for those of you in the post-vinyl age). This Song, with it’s intentionally generic title was was written shortly after George lost his court case concerning My Sweet Lord and it’s alleged infringement to the Chiffons’ He’s So Fine. Harrison said in his autobiography, I Me Mine, that after several days, he “started to believe that maybe they did own those notes.” His whole attitude about the lawsuit comes across in the lyrics, put in front of an uptempo, piano boogie.

This song has nothing tricky about it
This song ain’t black or white and as far as I know
Don’t infringe on anyone’s copyright, so . . .

This song we’ll let be
This song is in E
This song is for you and . . .

This video shows George promoting the single and album with a mimed performance of the song on the German television program Disco 1977, which aired on February 5, 1977. Although it’s not apparent in the clip, playing the keys is George’s old friend, Billy Preston. Thirty-Three & 1/3 was the first LP released on George’s new label, Dark Horse Records, and the label’s logo can be seen on George’s shirt. The single was released on November 15, 1976, and the album hit the stores four days later.

The Concert For Bangla Desh was held at New York’s Madison Square Garden on August 1, 1971. It was a charity event to raise funds for relief to the refugees in East Pakistan (now Bangla Desh) after the 1970 Bhola cyclone and during the Bangla Desh 1971 atrocities and Bangla Desh Liberation War. The event was the first benefit concert of this magnitude in world history. Present for the show was it’s organizer, George Harrison, along with musicians Ravi Shankar, Leon Russell, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Badfinger, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voormann, Jesse Ed Davis and Jim Keltner.

It’s great that Eric Clapton plays lead guitar on George’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps, just as he did on The Beatles White Album. With Ringo Starr on drums, it must have seemed very reminiscent of those 1968 sessions. The triple album highlighting the concert was released on Apple Records on December 20, 1971 and a film of the show was released later in 1972.

An interesting side note is that some of the crowd noise from the film was used in the Aerosmith recording of Train Kept A Rollin’ on their Get Your Wings album.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week. On January 22, 1971, John Lennon gave an interview to Tariq Ali, editor of the underground UK magazine Red Mole, and his assistant Robin Blackburn. The interview touched on John’s seemingly radical political views and how they were surfacing in his recent music. A detailed discussion of the content would go beyond the scope of this post, however, you can read a transcription of it in it’s entirety here. Inspired by the interview and as a nod to Tariq, who himself was considered to be somewhat of a “revolutionary”, John wrote and recorded his next single, Power To The People, in his new studio, located at his Tittenhurst estate home. It was his latest political slogan put to music. In John’s own words, it was another quickie, done at Ascot. As fans of John know, he is often very critical of his own work, and in the case of this song, he called it “rather embarrassing” in his writings, years later, included in his book Skywriting By Word Of Mouth. He also states that the song “didn’t really come off”. Despite his comments, it’s success on the charts (#6 Melody Maker UK, #11 Billboard US), show that it came off good enough in the eyes of the public. John was backed by his Plastic Ono Band again, which included Billy Preston on keyboards, Klaus Voormann on bass, Alan White on drums (however some sources credit drums to Jim Gordon) and Bobby Keys on all of that saxophone. John plays guitar and piano on the track and shares the production credit with Yoko Ono and Phil Spector. Heavily echoed handclaps resembling the sound of marching feet over a Power To The People chant in the chorus give the song a militant vibe and the background vocals were reportedly supplied by 45 singers, one of which was the late Apple artist Doris Troy. However, in this out-take version, provided as this week’s BROW, those backing vocals are not present, and we get to hear John sing it on his own. Enjoy…

Sixty-eight years ago today George Harrison, MBE, was born in Liverpool, UK, and went on to receive international fame as lead guitarist of The Beatles. So, yeah, we all know that. I don’t feel like I need to type up that George was such a great guy or why he was such a great guy because most that are here and reading this already know that. So whether you are into his flexible and innovative guitar playing with The Beatles, the element of mystique he added to the group’s image, his cheerful approach as one of the Traveling Wilburys, his enthusiasm toward various types of world aid (i.e Bangla Desh relief, Greenpeace, etc.), his humorous Handmade Films productions, his solo works, his enthusiasm with motor car racing, his looks, his books, his attitude, his style, or any combination of the above, or anything else you might love about him…just remember that today is a good day to reflect on how lucky we were to have him around with us for the time that we did. Let’s be thankful that his spirit in song lives on.

When Ravi Shankar told George about the starving refugees in his country during the Bangla Desh Liberation War, George was on fire to help out. The Concert For Bangla Desh he organized was actually two shows performed at Madison Square Gardens in New York on August 1, 1971. It drew 40,000 people, with all proceeds going to UNICEF. It is recognized as the first rock and roll charity event. Bangla Desh was the closing track from the famous benefit concert that also included Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell, Badfinger, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voormann, Ravi Shankar and others. All artist royalties from the re-issued DVD & CD continue to go to UNICEF.
