This week BROW looks back at the early days of Paul McCartney & Wings. Paul chose to limit his band’s live performances to his home continent during these years and play smaller venues such as universities and town halls, allowing time to “build up” Wings and make a name for themselves by getting at least a couple hit albums under their belts before attempting anything on a larger scale. He certainly did not want to rely on his clout as a former Beatle to sell Wings to the world and refused to include any Beatles music in any of the concert setlists of 1972-1973. It wasn’t until after the highly successful fourth Wings album Venus And Mars that Wings toured outside of Europe with a short Australian tour that included 7 shows over the first two weeks of November 1975. It wasn’t until 1976 when Wings peppered the setlist with songs from their newest Wings At The Speed Of Sound album and did a full fledged North American/European world tour, which yielded the only live Wings album. This was actually a triple album set titled Wings Over America which gave us a good 2-hour sampling of the live performances from the 1976 shows, however they were somewhat “doctored up” after the fact.

For the period before Wings Over America, the only officially released live Wings performances would be two songs:

(1) a song called “The Mess” which was never released as a studio recording. The live performance was recorded at The Hague in Holland on August 21, 1972 and was issued as the b-side for the Wings single “My Love” in March 1973.

(2) a 1973 live Wings recording of the song “Wild Life” which appears over credits on the DVD set The McCartney Years.

Because of the deficit of commercially accessible early live recordings by Wings, I have occasionally put up something on TheBeatlesRarity to give us a taste of how they sounded back when they were playing the smaller shows and were still a new band (such as this one). This week’s BROW is another of those times. “Soily” is an all out rocker that was first heard on record as the last song on the Wings Over America LP set or the b-side to the “Maybe I’m Amazed” single taken from this set. It was part of Wings’ stage repertoire all the way back in 1972, however the only official account of it from the studio is from an unreleased film by Paul called One Hand Clapping and issued as bonus material on a DVD packaged with Paul’s recent deluxe edition of his Band On The Run album. The recording presented here dates from July 10, 1973, when Wings were performing at City Hall in Newcastle, U.K. Unlike in 1976, when “Soily” was the concluding encore performance, here it was the show opener. The Wings line up at the time included Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, Henry McCullough and Denny Seiwell.

Extra info: In 1980 a VHS tape called Rockshow was released officially containing much of the same concert footage covered on the “Wings Over America” triple album. Although, it was never officially released to DVD, a portion of it is included on the DVD set The McCartney Years (Amazon link listed below).

Although it’s subject to change at this point, I wanted to give readers and fans a “heads up” on the latest concerning Paul McCartney’s Archive Collection. The next album to get this deluxe treatment will be Ram.

As most of you know Ram was the 1971 follow up to McCartney, Paul’s first solo album. The set is currently scheduled for release on May 22, 2012 and will include a staggering 4 CDs and one DVD, as follows:

CD 1: Remaster of the complete Ram album by Paul and Linda McCartney with Too Many People, 3 Legs, Ram On (version 1), Dear Boy, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, Smile Away, Heart Of The Country, Monkberry Moon Delight, Eat At Home, Long Haired Lady, Ram On (version 2), The Back Seat Of My Car (originally released on LP on May 17, 1971 (US)/May 21, 1971 (UK).

CD 2 (Bonus tracks): Another Day (single version from Ram Sessions), Oh Woman Oh Why (single version from Ram Sessions), Little Woman Love (recorded in August 1971), A Love For You (Jon Kelly remix and originally a Ram out-take), Hey Diddle (Dixon Van Winkle remix and originally a Ram out-take), Great Cock And Seagull Race (Dixon Van Winkle mix originally recorded around Dec. 1971 – here a version featured on BROW here), Rode All Night (out-take), Sunshine Sometime (out-take later used on Rupert The Bear animation music)

CD 3: Ram (mono version): Paul made a very limited edition of the Ram album for AM (mono) radio airplay and only distributed to radio stations. The mixes are not simply fold down mixes but actually different. (e.g. “Too Many People” has a longer fade out and the backing vocals are mixed much lower – read more about mono Ram here). The track listing is the same as CD 1.

CD 4: Percy “Thrills” Thrillington: Percy “Thrills” Thrillington is an alias Paul McCartney used to put together this orchestral arrangement of all songs on the Ram LP. Orchestra arranged and conducted by Richard Hewson. Track listing is the same as CD 1 except there is no “Ram On (version 2)”. These are instrumental orchestrated versions of all tracks. Although recorded in 1971, the original Thrillington album was not released until 1977.

DVD: Video features include Ramming, Heart Of The Country, 3 Legs, Hey Diddle, Eat At Home On Tour, a selection of “Now Hear This” jingles (these are radio promo spots for Ram).

As before, there will likely be scaled down versions of the complete set offered at a reduced price as well as a vinyl edition. As earlier McCartney Archive Collection sets (Band On The Run, McCartney & McCartney II), these will be issued by Concord Music Group/Hear Music. The entire Archive Collection with a long list of additional McCartney albums is now planned to be released by 2016 (Venus & Mars is supposedly next).

Amazon.com is already taking pre-orders for the set here.

After the highly successful Wings Over America tour in 1976, Paul McCartney planned a follow up tour of the United States for 1977, but this was not to be. Linda McCartney soon discovered that she was pregnant with their third child (James). Although they abandoned tour plans, Linda’s condition did not prevent getting in a little bit of recording. Paul chose a more relaxed atmosphere though, and set up a studio on a yacht called Fair Carol in the Virgin Islands, with the idea of putting an album together called Water Wings. As Linda’s pregnancy progressed, Paul did eventually end up putting the sessions on hold after finishing up both sides of the next single – “Mull Of Kintyre” (written with Wings bandmate Denny Laine) and “Girl’s School”. “Mull Of Kintyre” became a huge hit in the U.K. and historically the first single to sell over two million copies in that country. It barely charted in the U.S. with “Girl’s School” charting higher than the A-side (#33 on Billboard). James was born in September, but also around that time Wings drummer Joe English became homesick for America and ended up leaving the band. Guitarist Jimmy McCulloch also left to join a reunion version of the Small Faces. So by the time the “Mull Of Kintyre” single was released in November, Wings was down to Paul, Linda and Denny. However, this line up worked fine on Band On The Run, so no need to think it would not work again, especially with many of the sessions already completed earlier in the year. The album was finished up by January 1978 and released in March. Even though much of the album was recorded in the Virgin Islands, the Water Wings title was rejected in favor of the ironic title London Town, after the song on the disc that I am featuring here.

The first single from the LP, “With A Little Luck” was a commercial success on both sides of the Atlantic, however the two follow up singles “I’ve Had Enough” and “London Town” barely made a “splash”. Although, the rise of punk kept many songs like “London Town” from getting much recognition during this time, I’ve always placed it as one of my favorite Wings tracks of the period. The promo video features a surprise appearance of one of Paul’s old friends from the Beatles movie-days – Victor Spinetti, who starred in A Hard Day’s Night, Help! and even Magical Mystery Tour. Thanks for stopping by this week…

Welcome the the Beatles Rarity of the Week. This week, the BROW takes a look at a vintage Wings single from 1974, pulled from the Band On The Run album.

Jet was the first single released to promote the album (although the earlier Helen Wheels single appears on the North American version of the album only). The first pressings of the original Apple single, released in the U.S. on January 28th, 1974, contained the b-side track Mamunia, but this pressing was recalled and replaced with the more common one, released just a few weeks later on February 18, 1974. The new pressing had the b-side Let Me Roll It instead. Both Mamunia and Let Me Roll It hailed from the Band On The Run album. Most of the songs on Band On The Run were recorded in Lagos Nigeria, but Jet was recorded entirely at EMI studios in London after Wings returned from Africa. Paul owned a Labrador Retriever named Jet and had once owned a pony with the same name. It isn’t really clear which, but either the dog or the pony were likely the inspiration for the song’s title.

The version of Jet featured this week is from an unknown origin. It was a rehearsal performance that was featured on Paul’s radio serial Oobu Joobu on July 16, 1995, and includes Dee Jay Paul’s original intro to the song. It was likely recorded in preparation for the 1989/90 Paul McCartney World Tour or the 1993 New World Tour. To my ears, the song has a quicker pace than the original release, which adds a nice dash of new excitement to the delivery. More information about Oobu Joobu is available here along with more music from the program.

Welcome to another installment of The Beatles Rarity Of The Week.

In late 1973, after the recording of the Band On the Run album, Wings began scouting for some additional musicians to work with for the their next project – an album to be credited to Suzi And The Red Stripes, a pseudonym for Wings doing primarily Linda McCartney compositions and lead vocals. One of the tracks, called Seaside Woman, had already been recorded the previous year, but the idea now was to record a complete LP. Wings was presently only 3 members strong with Denny Laine, Paul and Linda. The first musician brought in to help out was a young Scottish guitarist named Jimmy McCulloch, formerly with Thunderclap Newman, Tundra and a dozen, or so other bands. Jimmy would go on to joining Wings as a full-fledged member the following April, with his debut release with the band being Junior’s Farm. The Suzi And The Red Stripes LP never saw a release, however Seaside Woman was released as a single a few years later, in May 1977. A re-mix reissue was released in 1986 along with an extended 12 inch single mix. A few of the songs intended for the album eventually were released on the posthumously released Linda McCartney CD Wide Prairie in October 1998. Jimmy McCulloch contributed guitar to both the song Wide Prairie and I Got Up, both featured now on the Wide Prairie CD, but originally intended for the Red Stripes album, and recorded in November 1973.

Luxi, from the those same sessions, is a nod to Radio Luxembourg, a main player in breaking the broadcasting monopoly the BBC had in place in the U.K. While Denny Laine sings “I heard it on Luxi” in the verses, Paul and Linda take on the roll of listeners requesting that the DJ play Jet (Paul) and Band On The Run (Linda). As the Band On The Run album would not be released until the following month, it’s possible that this track was intended to be used as a BOTR promo, similar to the radio spots recorded earlier for the Ram LP. Throughout the entire track Jimmy McCulloch is playing a mean guitar right out in the front of the mix. It’s no surprise that the band got him to stick around and do a few more albums with them before his tragic departure from us in September 1979. Paul plays drums on Luxi, but by the time Wing’s recorded their follow-up single, Junior’s Farm, drummer Geoff Britton had been added to the Wings line-up.

In light of Paul McCartney’s upcoming 69th birthday, next Saturday, I’m featuring a lot of Macca-related music on the site this month and I hope it’s hitting the spot.

Additionally, I would like to thank Beatle Ed, from Fab 4 Radio, for making me aware of this obscure little tune. Thanks for stopping by…

Last month I announced here that Paul McCartney will follow up last year’s expanded issue of Band On The Run with the same treatment for his McCartney and McCartney II albums. These will be issued as special edition and deluxe sets for both original 1970 and 1980 albums, along with plenty of extras, on June 14th, 2011 by Concord Music Group.

For the McCartney album there will be a CD of the original album remastered (see here for track listing), plus a second CD of bonus materials including Suicide (an out-take – likely not the same recording of it that I posted here) and Maybe I’m Amazed (from film One Hand Clapping). Also there are three tracks from his 1979 Glasgow concert (Maybe I’m Amazed, Hot As Sun and Glasses). Finally there is an out-take called Don’t Cry Baby and a demo called Women Kind. There is also a bonus DVD that will contain coverage of parts of the One Hand Clapping film (not seen in the Band On The Run DVD), as well as Paul at the Concert for the People of Kampuchea (Every Night, Hot As Sun) and MTV Unplugged (Junk, That Would Be Something).

McCartney II, released 1980

For the McCartney II album there will be a CD of the original album remastered (see here for track listing), plus a second CD of bonus materials including the track Blue Sway (with the Richard Niles Orchestration), Coming Up (live at Glasgow, 1979 – the live single version), Check My Machine (edited, b-side of Paul’s Waterfalls single), Bogey Wobble, Secret Friend (from b-side of Temporary Secretary 12 inch single), Mr H Atom / You Know I’ll Get You Baby (out-take), Wonderful Christmastime (edited version of 1979 single), and All You Horse Riders/Blue Sway (out-take). The DVD edition will also include another bonus CD with full length versions of Coming Up, Front Parlour, Frozen Jap, Darkroom, Check My Machine and Wonderful Christmastime. This CD will also include a ‘no vocals’ version of Summer’s Day Song and the DJ edit of Waterfalls. Finally, there is a bonus DVD that will feature a ‘meet Paul McCartney’ feature, music videos of Coming Up, Waterfalls and Check My Machine, plus two 1979 live performances of Coming Up at both the Concert for the People of Kampuchea and Lower Gate Farm. There is also a feature on the making of the Coming Up video and the out-take track Blue Sway.

Both original remastered albums and bonus audio content will also be issued as 2-disc 180gm audiophile vinyl editions, which will come with an MP3 download of all included audio. The special and deluxe versions of McCartney and McCartney II will also be made available digitally worldwide.

After last year’s highly successful Band On The Run expanded reissue, Paul McCartney is is it again, offering up this year with the same treatment for both 1970′s McCartney album and it’s 1980 sequel McCartney II. Both albums will be re-issued in CD Special Edition, CD+DVD and 2-LP packages.

McCartney LP, released 1970

The McCartney album has been marked as the definitive end of The Beatles because advanced copies of it were included in the press release where, for the first time, Paul answered simply “no” to the question “Do you foresee a time when Lennon/McCartney becomes an active songwriting partnership again?” Paul recorded the album in his home studio with no one else contributing to the record other than a few backing vocals from his wife Linda, the inspiration for the included classic Maybe I’m Amazed. There was also a great deal of conflict over the release date of the album as the other Beatles feared it would interfere with the following month’s release of the final Beatles album, Let It Be.

McCartney II, released 1980

Ten years later in May of 1980, McCartney II was released. In a 2009, BROW post here, I discussed how it was originally to be a double album. Like the first McCartney album, this one was recorded at home and has Paul on all the instruments with additional backing vocals by Linda. Additionally, as the first McCartney album signified the end of The Beatles, this one signified the end of Wings. In the upcoming expanded version, it is likely we will hear some of the material that was left off of the original 1980 release.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week.

About three weeks ago, I made a post giving some details on the 2010 Band On the Run re-issue (that post is here). Since most reading are likely already familiar with the album, I focused largely on the bonus material coming with it. I have to say, I went all out and purchased the Deluxe Edition and now I am in love with this album all over again (I’ve included some Amazon links below in case you want to order a copy for yourself). In celebration of it’s release last Tuesday (Nov. 2, 2010), I am featuring a BROW this week that is somewhat related.

In August of 1974, Paul McCartney & Wings recorded a short documentary film called One Hand Clapping that ended up not being released or aired on television. At the time the line-up of Wings was Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch and Geoff Britton. For years now, people like me have been using whatever means they can to come with bits and pieces from this film (or the music from it) in any way they can on unauthorized recordings and the like. At the time I did my earlier write-up a few weeks ago, I mentioned material from One Hand Clapping would be on the BotR DVD, but I was not sure how much of it would be there. Now I’m happy to report that all 51 minutes of the film are on the disc (along with a few other bits of music and film shorts listed in my aforementioned earlier post). Since there is dialog over some of the tracks on the film, they are given again on the bonus music CD without the dialog. The music for the film was recorded live at Abbey Road studios without orchestrations. So if you would like to hear very raw “stripped down” versions of songs from the Band On The Run album like Jet, Bluebird, Nineteen Hundred And Eight Five and the all-too-familiar title track, then you will simply love this stuff. The bonus music CD also includes two tracks recorded for the film, but not used (Country Dreamer and Let Me Roll It). Another such out-take from the film’s sessions that was not included is, at last, the subject of this week’s BROW.

Paul McCartney during the Aug. 1974 filming of the documentary 'One Hand Clapping'

Suicide was first written by Paul McCartney messing around on a piano in 1956 when he was 14 years old. It apparently was never forgotten because there is a 46-second performance of it heard in the Get Back sessions from Jan. 26, 1969. About 15 months later, 8 seconds of the song actually surfaced on an official release. A snippet of it was tagged at the end of the track Hot As Sun/Glasses on the McCartney album. The version heard here from the One Hand Clapping sessions, was actually offered to Frank Sinatra, but he declined. There is also a shortened version he did in sessions at Abbey Road studios in 1975, and in 2001 he played a verse of it live on the Michael Parkinson Show. Between this little out-take and the bonus material on the BotR re-issue, that should round out the One Hand Clapping material well enough. If you decide to get the Deluxe Edition, there is a really nice hard back book that comes with it with lots of nice photos and more detailed information about all of the recordings and the sessions in Lagos Nigeria and London. The book also has lyrics and details about the ‘mugging’ in Africa where the original Band On The Run demo tapes were stolen. Finally, the third disc that comes with the Deluxe Edition is the exact same audio documentary disc that came with the 25th Anniversary edition of Band On The Run back in 1999.

After these 2010 John Lennon remasters, can there still be more to buy? Of course, there is! I’m sure most of you already know that out for release this November 2, is a reissue of the Paul McCartney & Wings #1 album Band On The Run. Here are some details about this repackaging of the album that many still believe to be Paul’s best since the breakup of The Beatles.

Up to now: On Dec. 5, 1973, the Band On The Run album was first introduced to the world. Over the years it has already seen a couple of reissues. In June of 1993, a remaster came out in the U.K. adding the bonus tracks Helen Wheels and Country Dreamer. Helen Wheels had been released as a single (b/w Country Dreamer), less than a month before the Band On The Run album, but was not included on the U.K. edition of the album. Alternatively, it was included on the U.S. editions. In March of 1999, the Band On The Run 25th Anniversary CD set was released containing a whole second CD of song fragments of various alternate mixes from the album tracks and a lot of speech-tracks about the making of the album. So what does this new reissue bring to the table?

Band On The Run reissue (Deluxe Edition), released Nov. 2, 2010

The upcoming remaster goes all out with various packages offered containing CDs, DVD and vinyl. Also, if you order any of these packages (described below) from PaulMcCartney.com, you are sent an immediate download of Band On The Run (live in Glasgow, 1979) and No Words (live in Glasgow, 1979). Interestingly enough, I featured Band On The Run (live in Glasgow, 1979) as a BROW back in November of 2007. You can check that out here.

The Deluxe Edition contains 3 CDs and a DVD, described below:

1) The first CD is a remaster of the original 9 track album (using all original mixes).

 1. Band On The Run
2. Jet
3. Bluebird
4. Mrs. Vandebilt
5. Let Me Roll It
6. Mamunia
7. No Words
8. Picasso’s Last Words (Drink To Me)
9. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five

2) The second CD contains these 9 bonus tracks:

 1. Helen Wheels (the single version already contained in previous editions of BOTR, and Wingspan)
2. Country Dreamer (the single version already contained in U.K. 1993 remaster edition of BOTR)
3. Bluebird (from One Hand Clapping, see below)
4. Jet (from One Hand Clapping, see below)
5. Let Me Roll It (from One Hand Clapping, see below)
6. Band On The Run (from One Hand Clapping, see below)
7. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five (from One Hand Clapping, see below)
8. Country Dreamer (from One Hand Clapping, see below)
9. Zoo Gang (originally a b-side to the U.K. BOTR single, and appeared as a bonus track on the U.K. 1993 remaster edition of Venus And Mars)

Tracks 3-8 on the bonus music disc are all from One Hand Clapping, which was a documentary showing Wings at work at Abbey Road studios on August 15th, 1974, recording songs for a proposed live/studio album. It was never released, but pieces of it have surfaced on various bootlegs over the years. Parts from it were also used in some of the music that plays over the menus of the 2007 McCartney Years DVD set, including a piece of track 7 above.

3) The third CD is a remastered documentary disc featuring interviews and alternative versions of the album tracks. I don’t have a specific track listing for this disc at present, although I expect it will be similar in style to the bonus disc that came with the Band On The Run 25th Anniversary Edition.

4) The DVD. Here is track listing:

 1. Band on The Run (music video)
2. Mamunia (music video)
3. Album Promo (featuring Band on the Run, Mrs Vandebilt, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five, Bluebird)
4. Helen Wheels (music video)
5. Wings in Lagos (short documentary about recording of BOTR in Lagos, Nigeria)
6. Osterley Park (short documentary about BOTR album cover photo shoot)
7. One Hand Clapping (I’m not sure how much coverage there is of the original documentary…hopefully all of it)

I’m not sure if tracks 1, 2, and 4 are the same videos that appear on The McCartney Years DVD set, but that is likely. There is also an audio documentary originally produced for the 25th Anniversary edition of BOTR.

5) Book: 120-page book containing many previously unpublished images by Linda McCartney and Clive Arrowsmith, album and single artwork, and a full history of the album, complete with a new interview with Paul and expanded track by track information for all four discs.

That wraps up the Deluxe Edition.

The Special Edition (aside from packaging differences) contains everything above except for the third CD and the book. The Standard Edition only contains the first CD. Finally, the Vinyl Edition contains everything on the first and second CDs (described above) on 2 discs of 180 gram audiophile vinyl in a gatefold package featuring the original accompanying poster.

Shopping around, the best prices I’ve seen on order/pre-order are from Amazon, although if you are after the two free downloaded tunes (described above) you should order from PaulMcCartney.com.
Welcome to this week’s VOW. This is an interesting promo video showing Paul McCartney’s dwindled Wings line-up of himself, Linda McCartney and Denny Laine in Lagos, Nigeria in August and September 1973 while there to record the Band On The Run album. Paul’s epic #1 album released in December 1973 will be available in multiple configurations featuring remastered rare bonus audio & video content with special exclusive packaging. The remastered editions hit the stores on November 1 in the UK and the next day in the US (in plenty of time to get on the Christmas list). You can read all about it on a news post at Paul McCartney.com here.
