Watching The Wheels – John Lennon, posthumously released promo, 1981

Watching The Wheels 45, cover art

Watching The Wheels was the third and final single issued from John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Double Fantasy album (following (Just Like) Starting Over and Woman). It was released posthumously on March 13, 1981 (US), over three months after John’s tragic murder. The song’s message is for fans of John who were puzzled over his departure from the recording industry during his ‘househusband’ years (1975-1980); a time when he chose to stay home and spend time with his new son, Sean. Appropriately the video footage shows a nice collection of home clips of John and Sean having fun together. Some recordings in my collection reveal that John’s earliest demos of Watching The Wheels date way back to the mid-1970′s when the song was likely titled ‘I’m Crazy’. The message and lyrics were refined over John’s final years with us, yielding the perfected version that is now my favorite on the Double Fantasy album. John plays piano and sings, while a hammer dulcimer is played by session musician, Matthew Cunningham.

Really nice song and video. What hurts me is that he didn't show Julian those attentions, and I'm just a fan; I can only imagine the pain he must have felt knowing his dad gave it all up for this child. I'm glad that Julian turned out to be the wonderful man he is today guided by his mum. I wonder if John finally realized his wrongdoings to both his son, and Cynthia as well. Like the saying goes, "a day late and a dollar short".

I don't want to get into a big discussion on this as it is off the intended focus of the post, but for those readers who may not be aware, John thankfully did reconcile with Julian, renewing his relationship with his first son, in the mid-70's.

Yes Nat, he did "finally" reconcile. I'm just mentioning the hurt that Julian suffered from John's years of neglect. Julian himself has mentioned how long he felt resentment towards his father, but is now over it and moved on. This video just reminds me of how John gave up life in the spotlight for this son, but for many years neglected his firstborn! No "discussion" intended! Thanks for sharing.

By far my favorite song on Double Fantasy as well... love the Anthology version and other guitar demos, but the final version is the best. It's the only one of John's songs on DF that I *don't* prefer the stripped-down version of. What a bittersweet song, it always makes me wistful. Seems like he had finally gotten things together and found some peace in his life. What an irony.
