On November 23rd, 1965, The Beatles arrived at Twickenham Studios Stage #3 and filmed promo clips for their upcoming single We Can Work It Out b/w Day Tripper, working into the wee hours of the following day. While they were there, they also went back into their earlier cannon of singles and made video clips for Help!, Ticket To Ride and I Feel Fine (one of the two I Feel Fine clips can be viewed here). Day Tripper had just been recorded the previous month on October 16th and We Can Work It Out four days later. The planned single was due for release in the US and UK during the first week in December along with their Rubber Soul LP, both of which proved to be very hot items during the Christmas shopping weeks of 1965.
The clip of Day Tripper featured here is one of three recorded at this session, all of which show The Beatles miming to the record. This variation shows them standing behind props that represent travel. George and Ringo stand behind the windows of a train while John and Paul stand behind a grounded airplane. Paul errors his line “she’s a big teaser” replacing it with “tried to please her”, which is the counterpart line from the following verse, and laughs at his mistake. Ringo has no drum kit, so he shakes a tambourine and plays air drums before grabbing a saw and cutting up the train. The resulting films were created by InterTel VTR, a company owned by manager Brian Epstein’s NEMS Enterprises.
