Paperback Writer/Rain single (promo clip for Ed Sullivan show)

Paperback Writer/Rain Capitol 45, 1966

The Beatles had a new single to promote but did not want to interrupt their Revolver recording sessions to visit television studios all over the world to perform it for everyone. So instead they enlisted the help of director Michael Lindsay-Hogg (who would also end up working on a few Beatles projects after this) to create promo films of both sides of the single (Paperback Writer & Rain). The clip, seen here, was filmed on May 19, 1966 and, in the U.S., was aired exclusively on the Ed Sullivan Show on June 5, 1966, six days after the U.S single had hit the stores. Paul’s chipped front tooth from a recent moped accident is very visible in the Paperback Writer performance. A still from the intro clip was used for the back cover of the Revolver album. The intro clip also show the Beatles looking at transparencies of the butcher cover photograph soon to be placed on their upcoming Yesterday and Today album.

I always wondered what had happened to Paul's tooth. I thought it was just the angle at which the video was filmed, creating some kind of distorted shadow....Anyway, the accident....was this the accident Paul had in his car which is where the rumor started that he was killed, or is this the result of a different accident? By the way, kuddos for him  for performing with the chipped tooth and not being embarrassed by it. What a trooper! A Beatle all the way!! (Love you Paul!!)

NatashaKinky Paul's chipped tooth was a result of a Moped accident and is also apparent in the photo session used to create the butcher cover photo on the first copies of the "Yesterday and Today" LP. http://www.mybeatlescollection.com/images/CollectorsCorner/butchercover/thirdstatefront.jpg

My latest conversation: Record Roundup #2 - "Love Me Do" (Parlophone R-4949)

The Paul tooth is very funny this promotional. Car accident.Great images.Thank you!

I remember seeing this on TV that night, but my memory had switched a different image, one of them on Sullivan's stage, with this London footage. Memory often does that, mine at least. I feel that these songs were a musical lull for them, just before their amazing surprises.

Another great BROW. I hope that someday soon, the folks that own the copyrights will see fit to officially release some of these video performances, such as this one , as well as those on the Anthology series. Would love to own them in DVD or Blu-Ray.

Actually Michael, this is a "VOW" instead of a "BROW" (a mere technicality, I realize...but for these I'm not striving for the rare). I thoroughly agree with you though and that is one of the reasons I started up the Friday VOW thing in the first place. A complete collection of all of The Beatles promo videos for the singles on Blu-Ray/DVD would certainly rule the world.

Thank you!!! I can't believe I've never seen the full Ed Sullivan videos before, just the bits from the mish-mash from Anthology.

P.S. This is one of the best singles in history.
