Beatles Rarity Of The Week – If I Fell, Live In Philadelphia, 1964

Posted by on September 6, 2010 at 7:00 am.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week. It’s no secret that The Beatles summer 1964 tour of the U.S. was a tremendous success and the shows at Philadelphia’s Convention Hall were no exception. Apparently it was simulcast by radio station WIBG giving us one of the few decent soundboard recordings of The Beatles touring days and thankfully, it has survived. John’s guitar might be mixed a bit too loud but the vocals are up front and the music isn’t completely drowned out by the screaming. This was one of the first concerts to be bootlegged, appearing on the Live At Whiskey Flats LP in fairly good quality. As a follow-up to last week’s BROW, where I posted the original composing tape of John Lennon’s If I Fell, I’ve opted to feature a live account of the song where John and Paul have somewhat of a giggling fit while singing it. A special thanks goes out to Facebook subscriber Ric Serrano, for mentioning this recording to me and giving me the idea to include it this week.

A Happy Note from Happy Nat: As of this month, the BROW is 3 years old! Can you believe it! I know most of you haven’t been around that long to read and hear them but they are still here in case you still need to (and want to) catch up. It’s been beyond fun so far, and I’ve got to know a lot more fans too – and that alone makes it worth it. So thanks everyone for sticking around and there is a lot more good stuff to come. Stay tuned…

Aww this is so sweet!!! I love how they giggle!!!

And congrats for the 3rd anniversary Happy Nat!!

it is amazing how many new songs i get to hear of the beatles even 40 years after they broke up. keep them coming. thanks.

P.S. Any thoughts on what caused the giggles? Just usual Lennon/McCartney high spirits, or did one of them do something? I know that on the record, they sang into one mic--which could easily cause them to start laughing-- but it doesn't sound like a shared mic here.

What specifically caused the giggles(?)...I dunno. I think they giggled on If I Fell at a few of the prior 1964 shows too so it's likely some sort of "on-going" inside joke. I thought it would be a good post given that it was recorded in the first week of September too and therefore also an anniversary of sorts.

MAD PROPS to The Beatles Rarity on its 3rd Anniversary... and to Ric for suggesting this BROW. I have heard about the giggling fits version of "If I Fell... Over", but this is my first time actually hearing it. Since it's always in my Top Ten favorite Beatles songs, this BROW is an especially tasty treat. Mark, you are really providing us old-time Beatlemaniacs with something special. (And I'm sure the newbies dig it as well.) Happy Anniversary!

Fantastic tape. This is, of course, the famous concert that I was not allowed to go to because my father wouldn't allow it. I still hold a grudge some 46 years later. LOL. If I Fell (over) is a gem, along with laughter from the boys. Thanks for posting this. Any others from Philly, the show I missed????

Hi Lana...I have the whole show. I'll put another one up one of these days. Personally, I think you should have 'snuck' 'out of the house.

Oh, I wasn't one to sneak out of the house. My cousin did though. I should have gone with her. LOL. I was a "model child" though.

Hope you'll eventually post the entire show. Love these rarities, especially the Philly songs.

Three years, and I think I've been along for the entire ride. Always a highlight of my week, Mark. This track is of course no exception. Thanks!

You're one of the few vets from the old days Mark. So glad you have stuck around!
