One of my favorite Ringo Starr album’s is 1998′s Vertical Man. The hit single off the album was called La De Da and along with Ringo’s regular band (Mark Hudson, Steve Dudas and Jim Cox), was his brother-in-law, Joe Walsh (doing that nice guitar work), and backing vocals by about 43 others including Paul McCartney, Barbara Bach, Steven Tyler, Nils Lofgren and Timothy B. Schmidt.

Note: Originally this post featured the La De Da promo video, but since this video has been pulled by You Tube, I have modified the post to feature the actual press kit (EPK) for the Vertical Man album which has some good snippets of La De Da and other songs on the album along with some interesting commentary from Ringo Starr. Enjoy.

With stars above them and all around them, they played an exuberant set that included highlights spanning Ringo’s entire career, from Beatles classics to solo hits. The show at the Greek was the culmination of a fantastic summer playing music on the road.

Yesterday on July 27, 2010 Hip-O/UMe proudly to announced the release of the Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band “Live At The Greek Theatre 2008,” on CD and DVD, also available in 5.1 Surround Sound.

More than a memento of a wonderful show, this is a remarkable playlist of music you know and love which is enhanced by the pleasure the musicians had playing it, and the fun the audience had hearing it. Each All Starr Tour is unique, a collection of individual musicians who have never come together before and played as this particular band. So each version of their hits has a quality that is distinct to this specific group. There is a palpable exuberance and joy that comes through every one of these remarkable songs.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week. I’ve decided to let this post be in celebration of my trip to Nashville, TN to see Sir Paul tonight. Since he hasn’t been to Nashville since 1974, when he recorded Junior’s Farm and Sally G there with Wings, I was even hoping he might modify his set list, and at least throw Junior’s Farm in for the occasion (it’s such a good rocker). We’ll see…but hey! I’m getting off track here.

On June 1, 2008, Liverpool, UK had one of it’s greatest concerts in history when Paul showed up in celebration for his birth-city’s year as the European Capital of Culture. The pre-show music was from his obscure UK Twin Freaks album and also some remixes of the Memory Almost Full track, Nod Your Head. Then Paul and band hit the stage and surprised everyone by opening with something he hasn’t performed live in nearly 50 years – The Hippy Hippy Shake. The Beatles used to cover this little rocker when they played in Hamburg Germany from 1960-1962.

The Hippy Hippy Shake was written by Chan Romero but The Beatles were probably more familiar with the version by Italian rocker Little Tony, because that is the version that made it big in the UK around 1959. The Beatles can be heard on some of the releases of the Hamburg, Star Club recordings, covering the song. The Beatles also performed it 5 times for the BBC radio programs in the early 60′s and one of these recordings (from July 10, 1963) is on the Live At The BBC Beatles release on Apple. Paul sang lead on all accounts, as he does with equal energy here.

So if the set list was modified for Liverpool, might it be for Nashville too? Again, we’ll see…

Beatle John Lennon could be immortalized forever on a commemorative coin if he takes the lead in a groundbreaking poll.

For the first time in its 1,100-year history, the Royal Mint is asking the public to decide who should be commemorated on the next coin in its Great Britons collectible series, alongside Shakespeare, Churchill, Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale and Sir Isaac Newton.

The iconic Liverpool artist is one of six heavyweights of British history, including Jane Austen and Sir Walter Raleigh battling for a place in the line-up, but so far he is placed fourth.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity of the Week. I’m Happy Nat and I put one of these out each week (usually on Mondays…to kind of help in some small way to get us through them).

When The Beatles made their October 1963 visit to Sweden, their first order of business was to record a radio performance on the Swedish National Radio program Pop ’63 in Stockholm. The Beatles performed before an audience of 100 or so teen aged girls and it was apparent from their reactions to the band that Beatlemania had arrived in Sweden. The Beatles performed I Saw Her Standing There, From Me To You and Money before taking a short break. Then they continued with Roll Over Beethoven, You Really Got A Hold On Me and She Loves You, before closing with Twist And Shout. Money, Roll Over Beethoven and You Really Got A Hold On Me were all covers that would be included on their upcoming With The Beatles album released the following month. There were some minor technical problems with the recording that could have been avoided if they had made time for a rehearsal and sound check, but the show still came out good. It was broadcast on the radio in Sweden on November 11, 1963. The Beatles Anthology 1 CD set (disc 1, tracks 30-34) contains the first 5 performances (in a slightly jumbled order), so I have decided to feature this vibrant account of the show-closer, Twist And Shout with a great lead vocal by John Lennon.

Thanks go to Joe Garrity for requesting this week’s BROW (as one of the performances left off of Anthology). I thought it a cool coincidence that I already had a performance from this show on my list to do for BROW soon, and when Joe requested it, I moved it up the list.
