Beatles Rarity Of The Week – Move Over Ms. L (alternate take)

Posted by on July 12, 2010 at 7:00 am.

Welcome to another installment of the once-weekly BROW series.

Back around late 1973 and 1974 when John Lennon was hanging around out in Los Angeles with Harry Nilsson, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and May Pang, he wrote a song for Keith to use on his upcoming and cleverly titled Two Sides Of The Moon LP, called Move Over Ms. L. Keith’s album was released in March 1975 in the US and the following month in the UK. Not only did Keith include Move Over Ms. L, but also recorded John’s Beatles classic In My Life for the record. Ringo Starr and Harry Nilsson also contributed to the album. John recorded his own version of Ms. L in mid-July 1974 and it too was also released in March 1975, but only as the b-side of his Stand By Me single. This week’s BROW is an alternate take from the same session as the master, yet it differs considerably. This account of the song is devoid of the heavy brass overdubs heard on the official release, thus giving it a much cleaner sound, yet with somewhat dirtier lyrical content. There is still another alternate take of this included on the John Lennon Anthology box set that is well worth checking out.

This week’s BROW was requested by Elliott Marx. Thanks Elliott, I enjoyed hearing this one again, as it’s been awhile.

I'm not aware of one Mike. Jim Keltner is the drummer he used on the Rock 'N' Roll sessions for the song and the earlier demos from the Walls And Bridges sessions do not include Keith.

Do you know if there is a version recorded by Lennon with Moon on drums?

Thanks for posting this. It was a treat to hear a version without all of the brass. I always think John's solo work is way too muddy - this was clear and totally rambunctious. Lots of fun.
