Eight digitally remastered solo albums by John Lennon are to be re-released in October, alongside three special compilations, to coincide with what would have been the singer’s 70th birthday.

In this very special year, which would have seen my husband and life partner John reach the age of 70, I hope that this remastering / reissue programme will help bring his incredible music to a whole new audience. By remastering 121 tracks spanning his solo career, I hope also that those who are already familiar with John’s work will find renewed inspiration from his incredible gifts as a songwriter, musician and vocalist and from his power as a commentator on the human condition. His lyrics are as relevant today as they were when they were first written and I can think of no more apposite title for this campaign than those simple yet direct words ‘Gimme Some Truth’.

Yoko Ono

The eight albums have been digitally remastered from the original mixes, and will be issued as part of a worldwide campaign called Gimme Some Truth. The titles are: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970), Imagine (1971), Some Time In New York City (1972), Mind Games (1973), Walls And Bridges (1974), Rock ‘N’ Roll (1975), Double Fantasy (1980) and the posthumously-released Milk And Honey (1984).

Double Fantasy has been remixed by Yoko Ono and producer Jack Douglas. The new ‘Stripped Down’ version will be part of a two-CD set.

Double Fantasy Stripped Down really allows us to focus our attention on John’s amazing vocals. Technology has advanced so much that, conversely, I wanted to use new techniques to really frame these amazing songs and John’s voice as simply as possible. By stripping down some of the instrumentation the power of the songs shines through with an enhanced clarity.

Yoko Ono

The albums have been digitally remastered from Lennon’s original mixes by Ono and a team of engineers led by Allan Rouse at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London and by George Marino at Avatar Studios in New York. Each of the remastered titles will be packaged in digipack sleeves with original album art and will feature booklets with photos and new liner notes by Paul Du Noyer.

There will also be a deluxe 11 CD collector’s box set titled The John Lennon Signature Box, containing the remastered albums plus previously unreleased rarities and non-album singles. The box will include a limited edition print of a Lennon artwork, and a hardback book including photographs, poetry, artwork, and liner notes by Anthony DeCurtis.

A four-CD set of themed discs titled Gimme Some Truth will also be issued, containing 72 songs on the themes of Roots (Lennon’s rock ‘n’ roll roots and influences), Working Class Hero (socio-political songs), Woman (love songs) and Borrowed Time (songs about life). It will include liner notes by DeCurtis and rare photographs.

A 15-song best-of collection titled Power To The People: The Hits completes the reissue programme. It will be available as a single CD, digital download, and an Experience Edition with additional content.

The project will be launched in 4 October 2010 in most countries, and the following day in North America. The remastered tracks will also be available as digital downloads.

This week’s BROW continues with the third in our “take 1″ series.

The entire evening session of February 16, 1965 was spent on John Lennon’s Yes It Is. The band used their conventional line-up of Paul on bass, Ringo on drums, George on electric guitar and John on acoustic guitar, playing rhythm. George would be using his new volume control pedal, that had just been broken in that afternoon, when they recorded his Help! soundtrack tune, I Need You. Take 1 of Yes It Is is only treated with a guide vocal from John and although it is a complete run through, they play it sloppily. This is mainly because they were still learning the song. Nevertheless, it is charming and certainly of historical interest to hear the humble beginnings, with the thought in mind of the perfection the final master (take 14) demonstrated, with the double-tracked Lennon vocal fully supported by the close harmonies from both Paul and George. On take 1, Paul makes some bass errors in the third verse, John gets a little silly with his vocals, and George doesn’t really know what to play yet. Since they haven’t worked out an ending at this point, they finish by vamping on an E chord. You can barely catch John saying “we’ll have to have an ending” just as the tape cuts off. Incidentally, if you’d like to hear take 2, most of it is included on The Beatles Anthology 2 CD set (disc 1, track 2). Since take 2 breaks down toward the end, the Anthology 2 mix uses an edit of the beautifully remastered take 14 to finish it up.

This concludes the series of take 1s, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be more coming up later. Thanks again go to Stacia for the “take 1 series” idea. It’s been fun!

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria are proud to announce that Paul is throwing his support behind the BORN HIV FREE campaign. His forthcoming show this weekend in London’s Hyde Park will be broadcast exclusively through the BORN HIV FREE channel on YouTube.

Paul will headline this summer’s “Hard Rock Calling” weekend, the concert series sponsored by The Hard Rock Café, which takes place in London’s Hyde Park from 25 to 27 June 2010. Paul’s concert on the Sunday 27th will be filmed and streamed live exclusively through the dedicated YouTube BORN HIV FREE channel at www.youtube.com/BornHIVFree . This will be the first time a European concert is broadcast live on YouTube. The concert will remain available for viewing by web users worldwide for a full month after the concert date. Viewers will also be able to find more about Born HIV Free and sign up to show their support for the campaign.

Paul has appeared in Hyde Park only twice before – the first time was when he opened and closed 2005’s Live 8 concert and the second when he came on stage as a surprise guest last summer at Neil Young’s show to perform The Beatles’ anthem ‘A Day In The Life’.

This concert is part of Paul’s all new ‘Up and Coming Tour’, which started in the US earlier this year. The Hyde Park performance will mark the end of a successful run of shows in the UK and Ireland which saw Paul headline the Isle Of Wight Festival and perform his first ever UK standalone stadium show at Scotland’s legendary Hampden Park Stadium.

In keeping with his headline-making special concerts over the last few years, this all new tour has already broken ticket selling records around the world and has seen the iconic star and his band play unique venues, places and locations; new cities he’s never played and familiar markets he’s not visited for a while.

The Hyde Park show will feature a typically diverse set list, drawing on two hours plus worth of selections spanning the catalogues of The Beatles, Wings and Paul’s solo career – including tracks from The Fireman’s 2008 album ‘Electric Arguments’.

The BORN HIV FREE campaign was created to mobilize public support for the work of The Global Fund and for a world where no child is born with HIV by 2015. The campaign has a contemporary aesthetic, bringing together well known artists to create a bold and innovative body of work that is both upbeat and optimistic in tone. The call for action to virtually eliminate the transmission of HIV from mother to child by 2015, [originally called for by UNAIDS and supported by TGF & all its parners] is entirely realizable. The campaign’s main message is that “We can put a stop to this in the next five years. A world where all children are BORN HIV FREE is now possible”.

With the announcement of her Ambassadorship for the Global Fund for the Protection of Women and Children Against AIDS in December 2008, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy declared that one of the ways she wanted to act as an ambassador was to engage the world of art, culture, fashion and entertainment for the cause of ensuring that virtually all children are BORN HIV FREE. The campaign grew out of this commitment and has expanded to involve world renowned artists including Amy Winehouse, U2, Jean-Paul Gaultier and several others throughout these creative fields.

Paul’s concert and support will help The Global Fund increase public awareness about the BORN HIV FREE campaign, encourage citizens to sign-up and enable donor countries to continue increased investments in The Global Fund so that an HIV-free generation can become a reality by the campaign year goal of 2015.

YouTube, the video-sharing website, has vastly extended the reach of the BORN HIV FREE campaign by providing an easily accessible platform allowing millions of people to see the concert.

This week’s VOW is to get you ready, in case you have a ticket to see Ringo this summer. His US tour is currently in progress. Back Off Boogaloo was Ringo’s second solo UK single and third in the US. It made it to #9 on the US Billboard charts and #3 on the UK Melody Maker charts. George Harrison produced the original single and plays guitar on it. It also has Klaus Voormann on bass and Gary Wright on keyboards. Of course, Ringo is on the drum kit. It has been rumored that Boogaloo was a nickname for Paul McCartney, and that the lines in the song Wake up meathead, don’t pretend that you are dead are directed at him. While this is plausible, given the dispute over Apple Records going on at the time, Ringo, in 1977, claimed only that the song was inspired by his late friend Marc Bolan (of T.
The additional footage includes an ad for Beatles dolls and Ed Sullivan’s interview with members of the band, not seen since it aired on May 24, 1964.

Also the reissue will be newly remastered, with audio in mono and a 5.1 remix. Furthermore, the four episodes have the original commercials included from 1964 and 1965.

The Beatles’ appearance on Sullivan’s show on Feb. 9, 1964 was seen by 73 million viewers, which represented 86% of all televisions turned on at the time, and was the most-watched TV program of all-time, up to that point in time.

This week’s BROW continues with the second in our “take 1″ series.

On February 11, 1963, The Beatles took a day off of their tour with Helen Shapiro, to go into the Abbey Road studio and get an incredible 10 songs recorded before the end of the day. The idea was to use these tracks with the 4 already released on their singles (Love Me Do and Please Please Me) to constitute their debut LP, Please Please Me. Misery was one of the songs they decided to include on the record. John and Paul had actually written the song for Helen Shapiro, but she had rejected it. The Beatles began recording their version about halfway through the day’s session. Take 1 was a complete run through and could have been used to create the master, until they realized they had left out some lyrics. The second line of the middle eight section is supposed to alternate to She’ll remember and she’ll miss her only one, lonely one the second time around, but when the time came, they repeated the same second line of the middle eight from the first go-round (which is Can’t she see she’ll always be the only one, only one) instead. It was downhill from there, and they didn’t get it perfected until take 11. Producer George Martin added piano to take 11 nine days later as the finishing touch. The Please Please Me album was released in the UK on March 22, 1963, and on the same day, English performer Kenny Lynch released his own cover of Misery on a UK single. It was the first time a Beatles song had been covered by another artist.

Thanks again go to Stacia for the “take 1 series” idea, which will continue next week.

Not only was Paul a founding member of the greatest rock band of all time, The Beatles, but he’s done quite while for himself since. I can’t wait to see him in concert next month. In celebration, here’s a short excerpt of Paul on his 1989-90 world tour.
