In 1975, John Lennon was embroiled in his fight with U.S. Immigration and couldn’t leave the States. He’d been missing England for years, and was having the British Top 10 charts sent to him. Since he could not appear in person, John made a recording in New York for the U.K.’s television program Old Grey Whistle Test. He had been missing Britain so much that I hear he asked for English chocolates in lieu of money for this BBC appearance. Stand By Me hails from John’s 1975 album of great rock standards called Rock ‘N’ Roll and was originally written by Ben E. King for The Drifters, but King ended up recording it himself instead in 1961. The version here sounds very similar to what is on Rock ‘N’ Roll aside from John’s “Hello, Julian” statement to his son during the guitar solo and his spoken greeting to his English fans near the end.

Lennon's version of this song was one of the first I learned to play on the guitar. One of my favorites of his.
