Not much is known about this charming little track from Paul, about his early Liverpool memories. A recording of it never saw an official release, though one source I have on hand, has it published as early as 1973. The recording itself is likely from sometime between 1988 and 1992 and the lyrics appeared in Paul’s 2001 volume of poems and lyrics titled Blackbird Singing. Paul performed the song at the Liverpool homecoming event at Anfield Stadium on June 1, 2008. This recording consists only of Paul’s voice and acoustic guitar but there is a magical quality to this tune, at least for me, that just makes me want to hear it over again. By the second listen, I was really hooked…

It’s time for this week’s BROW. As you likely know, it was fairly customary for John Lennon and Paul McCartney to pen a song together, for Ringo to sing, on whatever album they happened to be working on at the time. During the Revolver sessions of 1966, John had a verse melody in mind for the “Ringo” song to put with a chorus melody of Paul’s. I’m not sure whose idea it was to write fairy tale-type lyrics, but it fit perfectly with this time of psychedelic influence. It could have even been Donovan, who has no official composition credit but, I understand, did come up with some of the words. Of course, the song is Yellow Submarine. The backing track was recorded and Ringo’s vocal’s added on May 26, 1966 and originally, it was probably just thought of as album filler. Then, possibly with the help of some sort of mind-bending imagination enhancement, the color came to the project.

The idea was to add a “party atmosphere”, and what better way to create it than by having a party in the recording studio? The date was scheduled for June 1, 1966. The invited, who participated in recording the party atmosphere heard in the mix, include Brian Jones (of The Rolling Stones), Marianne Faithful, George’s wife Patti Harrison, Beatle assistants Neil Aspinal and Mal Evans and others. This week’s BROW is a special recording of the effects used in the Yellow Submarine song, with the backing track and Ringo vocal from take 5 heard in the background. In order of appearance (roughly) there is:

1. John blowing bubble in a straw
2. 2 bells
3. a grinding noisemaker
4. party chatter
5. an ocarina (which is an ancient flute-type wind instrument)
6. a propeller cranked up and dunked in the water
7. spilled coins
8. a foghorn
9. a group singalong of the chorus
10. chains swishing in a metal tub of water
11. clinking glasses
12. more coins spilling and party chatter
13. a brass band
14. a tapping noise
15. “full speed ahead” and other mock naval orders
16. some type of submerging “whoosh” sound
17. response shouts from John (“life of ease”, “all we need”, “sky of blue” etc.)
18. Mal Evans playing a marching band bass drum

So, these things livened up the song a bit and instead of being “album filler”, Yellow Submarine topped the charts as a single on both sides of the Atlantic. Things were definitely changing as far as the unorthodox recording process of The Beatles. Their unique ideas and abilities, in that regard, blossomed even further for the next album, when they became Sgt.Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

I had some questions/comments earlier on the Digg button that appears after each post and thought I’d explain it a little better than I did before. The Digg button submits the post/article to Digg.com, which is sort of a storehouse of interesting articles sorted by various topics. Before the button has been clicked by anyone, the words submit to appear on the button, meaning it has not been submitted and you have the option to submit it, if you “digg it” enough. If you are the submitter, you will be sent to the Digg site after clicking and be required to fill out a (very short) form, so that Digg can verify you’re human (and not a bot) and categorize it correctly. After this is done only once for that post, every subsequent hit of the Digg button just gives it a higher score on the Digg site, making more Digg readers apt to want to read it. After it’s submitted the submit to words on the button change to the number of times it has been clicked (ie “dugg”) so you will know if you’d have to fill out the form or not just by looking at the button. If it has a number on it, it has already been submitted, or if not you have the option to do it yourself. You will not be sent to the Digg site after clicking the button unless you are the submitter. I think a lot of people were avoiding the button because they thought they had to fill out a form every time they clicked it, but that is not the case. If I feel a certain post is special enough, I will usually hit the Digg button the first time myself and therefore be the one that fills out the form.

Digg.com is actually pretty cool and definitely a good way to get the word out to a lot of people about articles you think are good and also a good place to find other interesting articles, scored by how well they are liked. So, if you dig a post, hit the dig button! Note: it only allows one hit per post per person (i.e. i.p. address). Thanks for reading!

This is one of eight tracks Ringo performed on the show. The show portrayed Ringo in a Prince and The Pauper theme with an alternate, poor look-a-like named Ognir Rrats. It included George Harrison, Dee Murray, Vincent Price and Carrie Fisher. Ognir is seen in this video singing to his sweetheart (Carrie Fisher) who was a little older than 16 here, but, still not looking old by any means. And take a guess: what Beatle is playing the kazoo?

Welcome to the BROW. This week I’m starting off with some info that is slightly “off the map”, so feel free to skip the write-up and just check out the tune, if you are so inclined. If, on the other hand, you bear with me and read on, the background that follows will give some insight into the unique theme of the music. I promise.

David English had the privilege of serving as president of RSO Records at the early age of 27. He managed The Bee Gees, did press for The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones and Dionne Warwick. In the 1980′s, David became involved in writing a series of cartoon books called The Bunburys (named after his cricket team). The characters (yes, called Bunburys) were a team of rabbit cricket players, and the stories were designed to encourage playing cricket and general good sportsmanship. When David told Barry Gibb (of The Bee Gees) about his idea to write these books, Barry teamed up with David to write a song about the characters called We’re The Bunburys. This was recorded and issued on a single (credited to The Bunbury’s, but was really The Bee Gees) that accompanied the first book. That was the start of it all. There were additional cartoons and music, including a second Bunbury’s single called Fight (No Matter How Long) that featured Eric Clapton on lead guitar. On October 5, 1992 a CD was released compiling the Bunbury-inspired music called The Bunbury Tails and features tunes not only by The Bee Gees and the Clapper, but also Elton John, George Harrison and a few others. The Bunbury Tails was an obscure UK-only release that went out of print very quickly.

George Harrison’s contribution to The Bunbury Tails is concerning the Indian Bunbury cricket-bunny Rajbun. George co-wrote Ride Rajbun with his son Dhani, who, at the time, was only about 9 or 10 years old. This was somewhat appropriate though, given that it is children’s music. It’s Indian-influence is enhanced by the amazing Ravi Shankar playing sitar. Dhani can also be heard on backing vocals. This track has not been re-issued since the very limited release of the CD, 18 year ago, and given that it is as intriguing as it is obscure, I thought it a good candidate for BROW. Enjoy…

This is The Beatles covering the old RIchie Barrett hit, Some Other Guy at the infamous Cavern Club. Granada Television filmed The Beatles with their new drummer, Ringo Starr, on August 22, 1962, to “possibly” use in their series Know The North. The footage was actually not used then, but was aired about 15 months later in November 1963 on the UK program Scene at 6:30. There is a tape stretch in the recording after the first verse. Sorry folks, but it is like that on all versions, to include even the cleaned up version on the official Anthology documentary. On my primary source tape of this recording you can hear someone in the audience screaming “We want Pete!” (referring to former drummer Pete Best) at the end of the song, but that has been truncated out of this film.
