Beatles Rarity Of The Week – Blue Jay Way (overdub session)

Posted by on January 4, 2010 at 10:04 am.

I’m hoping everyone reading out there has had a splendid New Year’s holiday. Unfortunately for the most of us, it’s now time to get back to the grind. The first BROW of 2010 is due so I’m going to jump right in.

Let’s listen in to an overdub session The Beatles held on September 6, 1967. George Harrison’s musical transcendence during this year was never more evident than on Blue Jay Way. George developed an uncanny skill with studio effects such as flanging, backwards tapes, strings and swirling organs and uses them perfectly on this song to capture the feeling of being lost in the fog in a strange city. The end result: another psychedelic masterpiece.

The same vocal track is heard here that adorns the master heard on the Magical Mystery Tour film/EP/album. Some of the backing vocal overdubs heard in the master are missing here while other overdubs are apparent here that were removed from the master, including additional percussion, among other things.

Enjoy, and once again, all the best in the new year!

Ola Jeff....yeah I can't think of those other guys names either at the moment. Didn't one of them wear glasses?

In many ways, George's "psychedelic" phase was far more satisfying than the other two...I can't remember their names. His direct, honest lyricism became surealism in the context of the swirling sixties.

Thanks Birdy and welcome to the site. To be clearer: The first cut of the song was recorded on 6 September 1967 as stated, and the overdub session was on 7 September and 6 October.

As stated earlier, newcomers are invited to register. It'll be good to get a few more regulars on here and get some discussion going from time to time.

this session was on the 7th (not the 6th), according to John C. Winn in his latest book THAT MAGIC FEELING (Three Rivers Press 2009)

I think his book is based on the final mix date (not the actual session date).

I have just discovered your site. Amazing. Thanks for sharing all this with us. May I link to you?

Yeah..I still visit over there but things are not really doing so well.

Thanks for this, Mark. Interesting as always. Looks like you made the prudent choice re your relocation. MOG downloads have been disabled for months, and this week the MOS is so clogged with spam (90% or more of all "Mogger" posts, I can't even stand to scan it.
