For this Memorial Day week’s Beatles Rarity Of The Week, I’m remembering an album by George Harrison that did not enjoy much commercial success but yet had a few really good gems on it. The album, released in October of 1982, was called Gone Troppo and one of these gems is a song called That’s The Way It Goes. The sales of this album was such a discouragement that George took a few years off after it’s release. He made his comeback like gangbusters however, with his 1987 CD release Cloud Nine. It was during this comeback that he released a single from the album of the well-known hit When We Was Fab which contained a remix of That’s The Way It Goes as a b-side. This remix version supports some varying instrumentation and is a little bassier. Since this single was only released in the UK (on CD and 12 inch vinyl) and is now long out of print, I considered it “rarity material” and am happy to feature it as this week’s BROW.

Also, for you George Harrison fans, be looking for the new compilation Let It Roll with newly remastered recordings of George’s best from his solo years.

Welcome to this week’s BROW. During the first half of January 1969, The Beatles rehearsed at Twickenham Studios in London, for what was planned to be a television special of them at work on new recordings. It was a tense time for the band and most of the digestible material from these two weeks is seen in the Let It Be film. The Twickenham sessions ended in disaster however when George Harrison walked out with the intention of quitting the band on January 10th. When he agreed to return on the 15th, one of the conditions was that they abandon the television special idea and simply return to Apple Studios to put an album together. That being said, there was still some upbeat moments of good old fashioned rock and roll jams during the period. One such moment was with a stop-and-go rehearsal on the 10th (well before George got irritated and left) when, after a warm up run through of Chuck Berry’s Hi Heeled Sneakers and Little Richard’s Long Tall Sally, John breaks into a song only recently introduced to them by Paul called Get Back. John, with the verse structure down pat, just makes up most of the words as he goes along. Paul joins in and provides a little coaching, as George has fun with some enjoyable guitar embellishments, and Ringo gets over-energetic on his drums. After reconvening at Apple Studios, this song was perfected and when released as a single, became the first product to emerge from the much talked about Let It Be/Get Back sessions of January 1969. The single was a number one hit for the band, backed with John’s Don’t Let Me Down. Both tracks, in finalized form, enjoyed some great keyboard accompaniment from the late Billy Preston.

Welcome to BROW. This week I’m remembering a children’s album from December 1977 called Scouse The Mouse, that featured the vocals of Ringo Starr and a few others. Released only in Great Britain, Scouse the Mouse was issued in conjunction with an illustrated children’s book that told the story of Scouse, a mouse living in a Liverpool pet shop, who emigrates to America to be free at last. The album was directed by Donald Pleasence and most of the songs were composed by Roger Brown. The songs on the album, when put together, tell Scouse’s story, whose main character is played by Ringo. Other characters on the album included Adam Faith as Bonce the Mouse, and Barbara Dickinson as Molly Jolly. Living In A Pet Shop is the first of eight songs on the album performed by Ringo. This was the final release of Ringo’s three-album deal with Polydor Records that he made after the demise of Apple Records in the mid -70′s. Musicians include Henry Spinetti/drums, Gary Taylor/bass, Peter Solley and Tommy Eyre/piano, Phil Palmer, Ray Russell and Nigel Jenkins/electric guitars, Roger Brown and Gary Taylor/acoustic guitars, and others. Since the album was not released outside of the UK, and has not officially been released to CD anywhere, and is long out of print, I considered a sampling from it as a qualified candidate for the rarity feature of the week. Enjoy!

Since 2007, I have been bringing you a new Beatles-related rarity every week and fortunately, I have not had to repeat myself yet. This week is no exception and I promise to not run out of rarities any time soon.

This week’s feature hails from the often interesting and enormous family of McCartney out-takes from his 1970′s era band, Wings. The uniquely arranged Cage was once a part of the running order for the last Wings album, Back To The Egg, released May 24, 1979. You may remember this album as the one containing the hit singles Arrow Through Me and Getting Closer. Later in the LP’s production, it was decided that another track from the sessions called Baby’s Request would replace Cage which was then filed away in the vault and never heard from again. The line-up for Wings at the time included Laurence Juber (guitars), Steve Holly (drums), Denny Laine (guitars), Linda McCartney (keyboards), and Paul McCartney (bass). A lot of other big name musicians contributed to the LP as well such as Pete Townshend, John Bonham, Kenney Jones, Gary Brooker, John Paul Jones, David Gilmour, Ray Cooper…and the list goes on and on. Needless to say the album was an interesting end to the long series of Wings releases from 1971-1979.
