The Beatles Rarity Of The Week marches forward with a look back to August of 1966. Originally titled Mark 1, this track, composed by John Lennon, saw the Beatles plunging deeper into their new founded era of psychedelia. This very rare mono mix of Tomorrow Never Knows sounds even crazier than the common version heard as the final track on Revolver. Producer George Martin made a last minute call to replace this mix (mono re-mix #11) with an earlier mix (mono re-mix #8) for the mono edition of the album. However, during only the first day of UK pressing, a small few had already been manufactured before he ordered the change. All but these first few British mono first pressings of Revolver contained the earlier and now common re-mix # 8. The standard mono and stereo mixes of this track are quite similar to each other, however this mix has a louder vocal track by John, heard more clearly over the effects. The fade-out is also slightly longer on this version and there is some piano heard in the fade-out that is not apparent on the common versions. The effects are also faded up a bit differently. Finally, if you happen to have this earlier British mono edition of Revolver on Parlophone Records with the matrix number on side 2 as XEX 606-1, then you may be able to get a few hundred dollars for it depending on the condition of the cover and the vinyl.

Welcome to this week’s Beatles Rarity Of The Week. This is where I take on the attitude that you can find the mainstream Beatles and solo-Beatles hits anywhere but once a week or so, you might want to hear something that there’s less of a chance that you’ve heard before. And if you have, maybe it’s been awhile because it’s not on the radio or easily found in stores anymore.

As you may be aware, around 1987 through 1992 Paul McCartney struck up a collaboration with Declan Patrick MacManus, otherwise known as Elvis Costello. The two, both Liverpudlians, got on well and wound up composing a dozen or so songs together. Four of them ended up on Paul’s Flowers In The Dirt album in 1989 including the My Brave Face single and one song called You Want Her Too performed as a duet with Elvis. Another couple McCartney/MacManus (aka Mac ‘n’ Mac) compositions showed up on Paul’s 1993 Off The Ground CD. Prior to the release of either of these albums Paul issued a single in the UK called Once Upon A Long Ago and the b-side on that single is this weeks Beatles Rarity Of The Week. Back On My Feet was the first Mac ‘n’ Mac composition to be released and came out in November of 1987. It surfaced again around 1993 as a bonus track on the UK-issued remaster of Flowers In The Dirt. Neither of these releases were made available in the US and now they are slowly sinking out of circulation anywhere. I actually feel quite good dusting this little rocker off and getting it online for your enjoyment. Spring has arrived. Have yourselves a fab weekend…

Welcome to the latest installment of The Beatles Rarity Of The Week. This week’s BROW takes a look back at August 29, 1966 when The Beatles performed their last gig on their final tour. This run through of Day Tripper at Candlestick Park, San Francisco CA shows how the craziness of the period had taken it’s toll on The Beatles’ ability to play well.

The way things had been developing over the previous couple of years had rendered touring unbearable for the band. With the primitive equipment of the time they were not even able to hear themselves play over the mania and they recognized that this was making it hard not to get sloppy. The added complexity of the arrangements on their latest album Revolver was such that it could not be reproduced on stage to their satisfaction anyway given the technology of the day. This discouraged them so much that they didn’t even bother with performing anything from Revolver during any of their summer tour.

Then there was all the furor caused by John’s recent ‘Jesus’ remark taken completely out of context by an American teen magazine. Despite John’s public apology, there were Beatle album burnings going on in the South and threats made on their lives. In reflecting back on the whole situation John Lennon said in an interview:

One night on a show in the South somewhere, somebody let off a firecracker while we were on stage. There had been threats to shoot us, the Klan were burning Beatle records outside and a lot of the crew-cut kids were joining in with them. Somebody let off a firecracker and every one of us – I think it’s on film – look at each other, because each thought it was the other that had been shot. It was that bad.

In another interview he said:

I didn’t want to tour again, especially after having been accused of crucifying Jesus when all I’d made was a flippant remark and having to stand with the Klan outside and firecrackers going on inside. I couldn’t take it anymore.

George Harrison got so uneasy about being shot that he said:

If everyone who had a gun just shot themselves, there wouldn’t be a problem.

In the previous month while touring in the Philippines, another fiasco had occurred that had the band fearing for their life. They were accused of snubbing the first lady, Madame Marcos, by declining an invitation to see her at the palace and it had been all over the local televised news that she had been let down by them. Although they made it out of there alive, they were subjected to a lot of harassment and bullying and getting shoved around before they were allowed to even get on the airplane to depart.

Touring had really become a drag and although there was no official announcement, it stopped and I can’t really say I blame them.

Welcome to this week’s Beatles Rarity Of The Week. By 1987, George Harrison was due for a comeback. After 1982′s commercial flop LP Gone Troppo, the only time we had heard from him was a tune he recorded for the Porky’s Revenge soundtrack in 1985 written by Bob Dylan called I Don’t Wanna Do It. George appeared from the woodwork in October of 1987 with a single to promote his upcoming Cloud Nine release due out in November. The song was a cover written by Rudy Clark called Got My Mind Set On You originally recorded in 1962 by an artist named James Ray. The James Ray version is quite good but George’s version souped it up quite a bit. In the UK, not only was a 45 released, but a twelve-inch single with an extended version that was a minute and a half longer, that we missed out on in the US. Because it wasn’t released in America and also because it is long out of print anywhere else, I thought a lot of people that haven’t heard it before may want to do just that – so here it is. The regular single version of the song went on to reach number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the US, and the Cloud Nine album which also featured Ringo Starr and Jeff Lynne, made the top ten in the US. This became the last solo album to be released by George in his lifetime.
