It’s a good time for BROW. A few days ago I was thinking about how I was so glad that I read the news today (oh, boy!) when I heard that Revolution 1 (Take 20) had been leaked to the Internet. Wow! I am glad I was able to get it downloaded before it was swept off of YouTube, due to EMI’s insistence, within 24 hours. It was interesting to hear how the main song was bridged with the effects that became Revolution 9. I knew this from interviews I had read and, of course, Mark Lewisohn’s account of the sessions, but to actually acquire a recording of it was very cool. This has motivated me toward Lennon-flavored White Album stuff for this week’s BROW and although I can’t top the 11 minute Revolution 1 “revelation”, I can humbly offer this little tidbit. This alternate take of Glass Onion is considerably different than the master. It was recorded on September 11, 1968 and many overdubs were recorded over the following two days. This version does not have all of the strings added later by George Martin (some are there, but not all) but does have an organ solo in the middle not found on the final release and an alternate ending making it a little longer. Let me know what you think and happy Friday!

This week’s BROW is called Hello Little Girl and is of some historical interest as it is almost certainly the first song that John and Paul composed together. Those of you who have heard the more common later recording of this song from the famous Decca audition, which appears on Beatles Anthology 1, may appreciate this more primitive account delivered very early in the partnership that would soon shake the world. This recording was made in 1960 when John’s band were calling themselves The Beatals and although George, Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe were in the band at the time, they don’t appear to be contributing on this tune, as it still only existed in the form of a duet between John and Paul. In the months that followed their name evolved to The Silver Beats, The Silver Beetles, The Silver Beatles and then, by August 1960, The Beatles. At this point they still were not getting any paying gigs.

It’s a stormy night in the southern Appalachians and a good night for a stormy sounding tune. Welcome to this week’s Beatles Rarity Of The Week. Back in November 2007, Paul McCartney released his UK single Ever Present Past in three formats: digital download bundle, CD single and vinyl single. The B-sides were all live performances of songs from the Memory Almost Full CD. All were recorded at Paul’s June 27, 2007 concert at Amoeba Records in sunny Los Angeles, CA, but were different tracks with each format. The digital download bundle contained Only Mama Knows and That Was Me, while the CD single contained Only Mama Knows and Dance Tonight. The vinyl B-Side is this week’s BROW: a melody given a somewhat poetic treatment by Paul called House Of Wax. It’s funny how something so recent can already be considered rare. I don’t see the digital download bundle on Itunes anymore, and the CD singles have all been bought up and at the time of this writing, only two used ones are available on Amazon Marketplace and the cheapest of them is $161.64. The vinyl single containing House Of Wax is nowhere to be found. A couple of weeks ago (on Jan. 27) Amoeba Records issued a CD EP called Amoeba’s Secret containing four songs from Paul’s concert at the LA store. Two of them had already been issued as the B-sides from the digital download bundle (That Was Me, Only Mama Knows) and two of them were previously unissued (I Saw Her Standing There – which was nominated for a Grammy this year, and the Wings hit C Moon). But the other B-Sides including the live account of House Of Wax are now lost to obscurity save for those that already have a vinyl copy and the lucky Moggers that happen to find this post.

Welcome to BROW. This week I read in the news that the Apple building where The Beatles performed their last live show has been put up for sale, with its owners expecting £25 million for it. The five-story building at 3 Savile Row in the Mayfair district of central London, was the former headquarters of the Beatles’ Apple Corps in the late 1960′s after the band bought it for £500,000. The building had already seen some history since it was built in 1735. It was named after Lady Dorothy Savile, the wife of the 3rd Earl of Burlington, and was once bought by Lord Nelson for his mistress Lady Hamilton. Lord Nelson was a British flag officer in the Napoleonic Wars. On January 30th, 1969, The Beatles ended their Let It Be project by filming a short concert on the rooftop of the building, with organist Billy Preston, before being shut down by the local police. In the basement was where the recording studios were set up and used by The Beatles and other Apple artists such as Badfinger and Mary Hopkin. Three days before this historic concert, The Beatles (and Billy) were recording there and this week’s BROW is a short sampling of that session. The official version of I’ve Got A Feeling opened side 2 of the Let It Be album and was one of 3 tracks on the album that was recorded from the rooftop gig. This studio version includes a mistake by Paul that has him starting over after singing a short apology. John decides to use a “cookie-monster style” voice for some of his vocal on this take. Billy’s organ comes through on this take quite nicely. A lot has been written about the Let It Be sessions and the drudgery of playing with a band that is in the midst of falling apart. There were some good moments in there too though, for anyone interested enough to sort through the tapes and find them. This may be one here. You be the judge.
