Welcome to this week’s Beatles Rarity Of The Week.

Yes, there were lots of arguments and bickering amongst the Beatles in 1968 during the sessions for their infamous White Album. Ringo even quit the band at one point. Yet you can’t say that there wasn’t still good times between the four of them too. Any nay-sayers need only look at the picture I’m including with this post to set you straight. Oh, but that was just a photo session, you say? Of course they’re going to behave themselves then. How about in the studio? Listening to this week’s offering though, it’s hard for me to imagine that they were not having fun recording it. It’s such a fun song! This is a rough mix of Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey. A recording of this take was slightly cleaned up to create the mono mix that was issued in some countries outside of the US (the US did not issue a mono White Album). John penned the song during his trip to India with the other Beatles earlier in the year and The Beatles ripped through this vibrant take of it on July 23, 1968. Those of you that are familiar with the master version will hear a few differences here. Some vocal overdubs are yet to be added and there are a few extra screams and effects here that were taken out of the account we hear on the album.

It goes without saying that the great early rock and roll tunes of the 1950′s were close to John Lennon’s heart and of course, in the early days of The Beatles, their stage act covered hundreds of them. This week the BROW focuses on John’s “oldies” album of covers called Rock ‘N’ Roll released in February 1975. In John’s words the album was “jinxed” and in fact was the subject of some very confusing circumstances and misunderstandings that led to more than one headache’s worth of ensuing litigation. I will free myself of having to explain the details by referring those interested to an excellent account of the situation here for further reading: http://www.rarebeatles.com/roots/roots.htm as it is beyond the scope of this post. It will suffice here to say that the release of John’s last Apple LP Rock ‘N’ Roll was preceded by an earlier substandard version of the tracks on an album called John Lennon Sings The Great Rock & Roll Hits (Roots) which was only available by television mail order for a short time from about 10 days before the Rock ‘N’ Roll release until a few weeks later when it was determined to be an illegitimate album in a lawsuit brought on by John. The original copies of the Roots album are now quite valuable, although be careful if you want to find one to buy because there are also plenty of counterfeit versions floating around out there. The Roots album contained much of the same material as it’s official counterpart but also sports a couple of additional tracks that later ended up on John’s 1980′s CD Menlove Avenue. In comparing Roots with Rock ‘N’ Roll, some of the tracks have noticeable edit differences, such as this old 1956 Little Richard number featured here, Slippin & Slidin’, which is faded out on Rock ‘N’ Roll and here, as heard on the rare Roots release, has the ending running through to it’s completion where John makes a nice ending statement.

On August 23, 1964, The Beatles performed live at The Hollywood Bowl for the first time. All 18,700 seats were sold. Legend has it that one woman was so intent on not missing the show that she gave birth midway through the performance after waiting the entire day outside the venue until the show began at 9:30pm. The show was recorded but never released commercially while The Beatles were together, due to the impact of the crowd noise over the performance. Besides live albums were not quite as mandatory then as they became later. However in 1977, Capitol used newer techniques to clean up the recordings of this performance and one of the two 1965 Hollywood Bowl shows and selected a few songs from each show to make the Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl LP which has yet to be released on CD in the US. This recording of I Want To Hold Your Hand from the 1964 show was not selected for that LP nor has it been on any other official release to date. But along with the screams you can still here it now, on the BROW. Keep listening and you will hear Paul introduce Boys by Ringo while John tests his mic.

Welcome to BROW. It’s a snowy day in my neighborhood. This week’s post takes a look at another snowy January Monday, 47 years ago, when The Beatles, supervised by A&R assistant Mike Smith played 15 songs, carefully selected by their new manager Brian Epstein, for Decca Records in West Hampstead, London in hopes of securing a recording contract. Pete Best was still on drums, and the band was shaky and nervous with so much at stake. Consequently, it wasn’t one of their more spontaneous sessions of the time, however Mike Smith was impressed with them. He had seen them a month earlier at a Cavern Club show and had high hopes. It’s well known history though, that the man in charge, Decca A&R executive Dick Rowe turned the band down flat, citing to Brian that groups with guitars are on the way out. Two of the fifteen songs performed were early Lennon-McCarney originals (Hello Little Girl, Like Dreamers Do) and the rest were covers that they often performed for their stage act. These two originals, along with three others from the session (Searchin’, Three Cool Cats and The Sheik Of Araby) were officially released on the The Beatles Anthology 1 CD set in 1995. The others were not officially released in the US but have been widely bootlegged. To Know Her Is To Love Her (originally To Know Him To Love Him) was written by another big name in Beatles history: Phil Spector, for his first band The Teddy Bears (with lead singer Annette Kleinbard). Here it is performed by a young and nervous sounding John Lennon. Perhaps I should have featured this last week since the date of the performance was New Year’s Day, 1962.

Welcome to this week’s Beatles Rarity Of The Week and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Perhaps the most memorable concert event of the 1990′s occurred on October 16, 1992 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. It was one of the biggest collections of artists ever assembled under one roof and included John Mellencamp, Stevie Wonder, Carolyn Hester, Nancy Griffith, Lou Reed, Edgar Winter, George Thorogood, Tracy Chapman, Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Johnny Winter, Ronnie Wood, Richie Havens, The Clancy Brothers, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rosanne Cash, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Chrissie Hynde, The O’Jays, The Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Roger McGuinn and one ex-Beatle: George Harrison. I guess most of those reading this have already figured out that I am describing what Neil Young termed onstage as Bobfest, but officially was known as the 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration. This was the show that celebrated 30 years of music from Bob Dylan. Each artist would come out and do one or two renditions of a Dylan cover in their own style and in the end, Bob himself appeared onstage to do a few songs with some of the others and solo. A double CD of the event was released in the summer of 1993 and later in the year a double VHS set was issued which contained 4 additional performances not included on the CD set. But even with these four exclusive songs, it was still not an account of the entire show. George Harrison’s performance of the Blonde On Blonde classic Absolutely Sweet Marie was included on both the CD and VHS sets but that was his second of two performances and his first performance was left off of both accounts of the show. George also performed If Not For You, which, as you probably know, had been covered by him before on his 1970 masterpiece triple album All Things Must Pass. Why was this track left off? Whose decision was that? I don’t know, but I am very happy to share it with you on now on BROW.
