Welcome to this week’s BROW which honors a recent request for Paul McCartney’s February 13, 1993 Saturday Night Live performance of Get Out Of My Way. This song hailed from Paul’s Off The Ground CD which had been released only a week and a half prior to this performance. Paul also performed Biker Like An Icon on the show (also from Off The Ground) and finished the show with the Beatles classic Hey Jude. Another interesting segment was a cheeky interview of Paul by the late Chris Farley. There is a Best of SNL DVD for sale out there somewhere that has this episode on it and if you haven’t seen it before it just might be worth checking out.

This week’s BROW comes from The Beatles 1965 North American tour and their gig at Houston, Texas’s Sam Houston Coliseum on August 19th, 1965, just four days after the famous Shea Stadium show and less than a month after the release of the Help! single (and movie). The Beatles performed an afternoon show and an evening show and all 9200 seats in the indoor arena were filled at both of them. This account of Dizzy Miss Lizzy comes from the afternoon show and honors a request I had for this song a couple weeks ago. This was the fourth song in their twelve song set and John introduces it nicely before he starts screaming out the vocals. He got a few lines out of order as he was known to do from time to time, but who really cares? And who caught it over the screams anyway? The lack of fidelity here is due to the fact that no professional recording of this show was ever made. I consider it sort of miraculous that any recording of it has survived longer than the Sam Houston Coliseum itself which was demolished in 1998 and redeveloped into the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts which opened in 2003.

This week’s BROW is a gospel flavored b-side from Paul’s C’Mon People CD single released back in February 1993 and long since out of print. It was recorded sometime between December 1991 and July 1992 as part of the Off The Ground sessions when Paul had his earlier band with Hamish Stuart (from the Average White Band), Robbie McIntosh, Blair Cunningham, Wix Wickens (whose still with him now) and of course, Linda. It also appeared as a b-side to the C’Mon People white vinyl single issued for juke boxes only. I know this because I happen to have a copy of it. Although the song is penned by McCartney, it has a sort of Motown ring to it.

Stick with me here in the coming weeks and I will get to the requests I’ve been getting. Until then, thanks for stopping by.

This week’s Beatle’s (related) rarity focus’s on John Lennon who would’ve been 68 years old yesterday. I had a request last week for his pseudo-biographical Watching The Wheels and was hard pressed to decide which representation of it to use. I have a good many demos and session recordings for this one and some sound quite different than the finalized version we are most familiar with. In the end, I elected to go with an alternate take that was a contender for the master, yet different enough from it to notice. This was recorded sometime between August 4th and September 5th, 1980 for the upcoming Double Fantasy LP release.

Welcome to this week’s Beatles Rarity Of The Week. This track was requested by a subscriber a few weeks ago. Back in 1966, while The Beatles were working on their Revolver LP, Capitol Records in the U.S. were putting together a compilation album of singles tracks that had yet to appear on a U.S LP plus some leftover songs that were on the British Rubber Soul album but left off of the U.S. Rubber Soul album. It came up three songs short of being a typical length so they pressed EMI for 3 new songs to round it out. What they received was three Lennon tracks: Dr. Robert (featured in an earlier BROW), And Your Bird Can Sing and the one featured here: I’m Only Sleeping. With that the U.S. album was completed and named Yesterday…And Today. These three songs were early versions that The Beatles modified with edits and overdubs after they were released in the U.S. That is why the U.K. Revolver mixes of these songs differ from the U.S. mixes. There are also mix differences between the mono and stereo mixes within each country and in the case of I’m Only Sleeping there are five different versions: U.K. mono, U.K. stereo, U.S. mono, U.S. fake stereo (on original stereo Yesterday…And Today albums) and U.S. stereo (later editions of Yesterday…And Today albums). Since the U.K. Revolver album was what was later issued to CD, the U.K. stereo version of I’m Only Sleeping is the most common. The version I’m featuring here is the U.S. mono version. The backwards guitar heard in verse two with the common version on “everywhere at such a speed” and “find there’s no need” is missing on this version and the guitar ends at the end of the solo whereas here it continues into the words “please don’t”. The common version also has the guitar starting immediately after the last word “sleeping” at the end and it comes in four beats later on this version. So if you’re fairly used to the common version of this song, I hope you enjoy this variation. On the other hand, if you haven’t heard any version of this song in awhile, I hope you enjoy it anyway because it’s a great tune.
