Beatles Rarity Of The Week – Get Back (no Pakistanis)

Posted by on July 9, 2008 at 4:39 pm.

This weeks BROW takes us back to the infamous Get Back sessions at Twickenham Film Studios in London on January 9, 1969. Only two days before, an embryonic version of Get Back had been performed for the first time. Now, with energy levels increased by a lunch break, The Beatles decide to bash out a hard series of “Get Back Jams” and what you are hearing is an excerpt from them. At this point Jo-Jo has yet to even be written into the lyrics. Paul improvises various place-names which leads to Puerto Ricans and finally to Pakistanis. This leads to improvising more lyrics about discrimination as these two groups were talked about in the morning paper concerning how too many non-white citizens of the British Empire were living on visas in England and competing for limited job opportunities. Then Mohicans are added to the lyrics. Crazy, huh? Toward the end Paul amuses himself by shouting out the title and groaning as loudly as possible into the microphone. The song had a long way to go but it sounds like they were having fun along the way. In retrospect the Get Back sessions are always talked about as a time when The Beatles were constantly angry with each other but there were some good times in there too.
