Welcome to this week’s BROW. This track hails from The Beatles’ first BBC session that George Harrison took on a lead vocal. It was also the last BBC session that Pete Best played drums on as one of The Beatles. George covers A Picture Of You which was already a hit song at the time of the session by Joe Brown and the Bruwers. You may remember Joe Brown from his performances a few years ago at the Concert For George, but like The Beatles, his beginnings as a musician date back to the British skiffle movement of the late 1950′s. This session was recorded at the Playhouse Theatre in Manchester, UK on June 11, 1962 and also included Ask Me Why and Besame Mucho. The sound quality here is as good as it gets for this recording of a dated radio broadcast, though at the time, things were on their way to getting better for the band. The Beatles were within 3 months of recording their first single and changing the world.

Welcome to the Beatles Rarity Of The Week. This week we go back to 1965 when The Beatles were quickly trying to wrap up a collection of songs for their Rubber Soul album in time for the Christmas market. This lengthy instrumental track was originally going to be included, but after John came up with “Girl” and Paul came up with “I’m Looking Through You” they deciding to resurrect a leftover track from the Help! sessions called “Wait”. With these new additions there was no room for this bluesy instrumental and it was relegated to the vault.

Never properly titled, “12-Bar Original” made an appearance on the Beatles’ Anthology 2 CD set in 1996, but it was severely edited down to under 3 minutes due to time constraints. What is presented here is a 1982 re-mix by the late EMI sound engineer John Barrett of the nearly 7 minute track in it’s entirety.

It was near this period when the line-up of Wings was reduced to just Denny Laine, Linda McCartney and Paul so it is not clear if drummer Joe English and guitarist Jimmy McCulloch participated in this recording that has never seen the light of day. The image here is of a postcard issued at the time to promote the LP.

In 1986, when George Harrison’s Handmade Films company produced the movie Shanghai Surprise starring Madonna and Sean Penn, George was right on board, not only with a cameo in the movie as a nightclub owner but also as the performer of four songs for the movie’s soundtrack album. Unfortunately, however, not all Beatles solo projects are success stories. The film was such a flop that the soundtrack was never released. The title song for the film remained unreleased until issued as a bonus track on the 2004 remastered CD of George’s Cloud Nine album. Another soundtrack song, the instrumental “Zig Zag”, ended up as the b-side to Georges “Got My Mind Set On You” single. The other two songs, “Breath Away From Heaven” and “Someplace Else” were both rerecorded in 1987 for inclusion on George’s Cloud Nine album. For this week I’m featuring the original unreleased soundtrack version of “Someplace Else”. Take it away, George…
