For this weeks BROW I want to ask how many Moggers out there are old enough to remember the album Beatles VI? The featured track for this week hailed from that album here in the States but since the days of CDs (which are based on the UK albums) it’s on Beatles For Sale.

This exciting version of What You’re Doing is take 11 and was recorded on September 30, 1964. It was temporarily marked “best” until the Beatles re-made the song on October 26th. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but features a slate call, studio chat, full vocals from Paul and John, and includes a false ending which was not utilized in the final version. Enjoy…

Those of you who are fans of The Beatles’ White Album (who isn’t??…if you aren’t you shouldn’t be wasting your time reading this) should appreciate this week’s BROW. During a lengthy 8 hour recording session for I Will, Paul would occasionally break off into an “on-the-side performance” on his acoustic guitar to sort of break up the monotony between takes. Paul has always been good at these on-the-spot kind of acoustic things and sometimes they actually turn into parts of real songs. For example the Hey-La, Hey Hello-La’s at the end of Hello Goodbye come to mind. Step Inside Love and Los Paranoias on the Beatles Anthology 3 CD set are a couple of these little ditties recorded during the same session of the track I’ve featured here. The date was September 16, 1968. There was a bit of strife within the band at this point and George didn’t bother to show up that day. There’s about 28 seconds of this that will probably sound familiar as it was used as an untitled linking track on The White Album between Cry Baby Cry and Revolution 9. It’s nothing too astounding, but now you’ve heard the rest of the story…(hats off to Paul Harvey).

I regret to say that the BROW will be canceled this week as I am opting for a “silent week”. Ruby, our sweet lab/hound of 14 years has lost a battle with cancer and will be put down this Friday around 7pm EDST. Needless to say, my family will miss Ruby very much and so I’m just not into a very musical spirit this week. But I promise to return with something good for all next week. For now I’ll only offer this photo.
