Beatles Rarity Of The Week – He Said He Said (home demo)

Posted by on December 5, 2007 at 5:01 pm.

This week’s BROW is a demo dating back to March 1966. It is John Lennon singing about one of his first acid trips. George Harrison and Peter Fonda were also along for the ride and George was having a very bad trip and hallucinations involving death. Peter tried to comfort George by explaining that he knew what it was like to be dead because he had nearly died in a childhood accident, where he had shot himself. John, getting annoyed with the whole line of conversation, said to Peter that he was making him feel like he’s never been born. John then had to have Peter removed because he was completely freaking him out. John’s recollection of this later inspired the lyrics of this demo entitled “He Said He Said”. Of course, the gender was later changed and “She Said She Said” went on to grace the end of side one on the Revolver album released the following August.

Hee hee. And to John's credit, I sort of called this a demo in my write-up. Actually it's not even that at this point but more of a "composition tape" or a recorded "thinking out loud" session with guitar in-hand. The earliest embryonic phase of arguably my favorite Revolver track.

John's works in progress are always interesting. Its fascinating to glimpse into his creative process
