Beatles Rarity Of The Week – Help! (takes 8 & 9)

Posted by on November 9, 2007 at 6:40 pm.

This week’s BROW, like last week’s, is in recognition of the just-released 2007 remaster of the Help! movie on DVD. Have you got your copy yet? It’s a bit pricey if you get the deluxe version with the huge book. Last week I featured the live version of the movie’s title song recorded at Shea Stadium. This week, let’s have a listen in to the studio sessions for that track. Featured here are takes 8 and 9 of “Help!” recorded on April 13, 1965. Take 8 was without vocals and breaks down 20 seconds into the song. Take 9 is the first vocal take and I think the vocals sound quite fresh for a first go at them. See what you think…

While you were starting your site my father was very ill so I only recently found you. Now I am catching up. I did buy the remastered Help! DVD at that time for my birthday. I then found a copy with the book for $32 on Amazon, new, and it's great! I wouldn't spend $100 on it though. Which is why I didn't. The remaster really only recropped the image (I don't care what they tried to "sell me" about director's intent. They shot it in std 4:3 but framed for both so any theater can show it whatever way they wish. The original DVD full frame still looks great, but of course on a 16:9 screen, you'll want the cropped version (the remaster).

Glad you are getting caught up, YKMN!

Dermahrk pointed out back when I originally posted this on MOG that this was the same take that was used for the album except for the first few lines which were cleaned up using another take.

With everything else the Beatles were it easy to forget what great vocalists they were. Though George & Ringo were quite limited in range the four of them (or the three od them) sounded very good together
